I arrived back to the school just as classes were getting out, so instead of staying I turned around ready to go home.
“Aimee!” Some guy called out, I looked behind me and saw it was Carson Wingman, he was running towards me.
“Yes?” I answered, I started walking again not wanting to talk.
“Whatcha doing? Skipping out the rest of the day?” he asked. I scoffed a little and then continued walking.
“Yeah, I suppose I am. Why?” I looked at him and then forwards.
“I was just wondering, want to skip together?” he asked and stepped in front of me. I stopped and then sighed heavily. I looked at him and then moved around him.
“No.” I said and walked a little faster.
“Wait! Aimee you need friends, come hang out with me, I can get my friends together and we can all hangout!” Carson said and smiled. I stopped and then looked at him, pretending to think.
“I’m actually busy, so if you don’t mind I need to get my stuff done. Also, I know what you and your friends are like, they make fun of my crowd. Me to be specific, sorry if this makes you lose a bet or something, but I’m not in.” With that I began walking and did not stop, but neither did Carson.
“Its not a bet, I promise, please at least think on it. You look alone and I want to be your friend.” He stopped walking after me and I kept walking away. I didnt want to bother, his type was always annoying to me.
Later on that night I checked the scrolls for Morgan, I wanted to see what her fate was. I knew it was good, but I had to be sure.
Morgan had been given a chance in the Heavens, I couldn’t help but smile. She was happy and healthy, her family would mourn but eventually understand her and forgive.
This morning I woke to a name on my wrist, Amanda Hedding. I rolled out of bed and got dressed quickly and then took off to Amanda. When I appeared I saw a car on the side of the road, I walked around to the front and saw a girl, Amanda, laying on the ground unconscious. I put my hands over her and brought her back, she was pregnant and ready to be giving birth.
“Hello, Amanda.” I spoke to her “I am here to help you.” She set up a little, tears running down her face.
“Alright, Im scared. Who are you?” She asked. I removed my robe and set it behind her so she could lean forward. My wings unfolded and instantly she knew. “You’re an Angel! But I’m not dead!” she was starting to panic. I smiled to her and spoke softly.
“Have no worries Amanda, lets get your baby boy delivered.” She nodded and started to groan in a lot of pain.
I pulled off her shoes and then her pants. “Set your feet on my shoulders, I need you to be as calm as possible.” I smiled, I put my hand on her face and looked at her, she relaxed and then I went back to work. I saw the baby was beginning to crown, everything looked normal.
“Okay, Amanda I need you to push. Count to three and push.” I said and concentrated. "Keep pushing, you're doing so good! Just five more seconds." I spoke calmly.
“My mom, she was supposed to be here for me. I left my phone at home but I didn’t worry about going back for it because I was already on my way to her house. Then my water broke, I remember getting out of the car and then I passed out, next thing I knew you were in front of me. This hurts so much!” She cried. I counted to three for her and then she pushed again, we did it once more and the head came through, the shoulders next to come.
“One more big push Amanda, count to three and push!” I smiled. I grabbed her jacket and used it to grab the child as he was delivered.
“Please don’t take my baby! Is he okay?” She asked. He began to cry and scream, the normal sounds of a newborn infant. I smiled and handed her him.
I began to frown and stood up. I was prepared for what was going to happen next. Jack Kelvin Heading was the name on my left wrist, it had appeared once the baby was delivered. I watched Amanda cooing to her baby as she looked up at me.
“His name is Jack! After his father and Kelvin after mine. Thank you so much Angel! I will never forget this moment."
I half smiled and then looked behind her as I heard the screeching of tired on the road.
She turned around, holding Jack tightly. Everything happened so fast, I barely managed to hear her speak the words “You’re not here to help me deliver.” She whimpered. Her car was struck by the oncoming truck rolling over Amanda and Jack. I had hovered over the scene and watched it all happen. Within all my power, there was nothing I could do. Of course I could have carried her and the baby and saved them both, but that would have been cheating death and I would have been punished. This was the part of my duties I would never enjoy. My heart sank as I watched the dust settle.
Everything became very still, and then I could hear Amanda crying hysterically. The driver of the vehicle got out and limped onto the road. I lowered down and walked to Amanda. She looked at me and cried more, I picked up the baby off the ground and held him for only a moment. Amanda was going into shock, any minute she would pass out.
“Your son, his spirit will forever live on inside you, his soul, to become more than what this earth can offer.” I spoke to her, she looked at me and choked up, tears streaming down her face. The baby was covered in blood, his neck was broken and his arm dislocated. The least I could do for her was heal him of his wounds so he didn’t look at all in pain, even though there was no life inside him. As for Amanda, she would have to be revived twice before becoming stable. She fell to the ground, she had a major head wound and possibly broken ribs. Before I left I waited nearby so she wouldn’t be alone. Amanda was conscious for now, so I explained to her about the possibilities for Jack, and that she would one day have a set of twins that would bring her so much Joy. She cried, but smiled while I talked. She told me about her husband and how he had a twin brother. Then she asked me to promise her that Jack will always be safe. I smiled and nodded my head, with that she fell asleep.
I replaced my robe and stood up. The emergency vehicles were arriving and I had to leave. I walked away and began to fade.
“Guess who finally made it a full day of school?” It was Carson, he was also the son of the physics teacher.
“I guess work isn’t so hectic. I ran on a call this morning and I guess they don’t need me anymore today.” I mumbled. “So I get to spend it here, unfortunately.
“Yeah? What exactly do you do?” he asked, I thought for a second and then smiled.
“I pick up dead people.” I said and chuckled to myself.
“Oh.” He said and looked down. I knew he’d judge.
“Did you hear about the accident this morning?” Carson asked. I shook my head no and turned away.
“Later Carson.” I said and started walking.
“Awkward.” He said and started laughing, I stopped and turned back to him.
“What?” I said.
“My name is Blaighton.” He laughed. I didn’t have to look to know my face was beat red.
“It is?” I asked and laughed to myself quietly. “You’re right, awkward.”
“Well at least I remember my friends name Aimee.” He spoke and then smiled. I sighed and gave him a half smile.
“Who said we were friends?” I asked. It was sweet of him to not be so mad, I’m still biting my tongue for not knowing his name.
“Good thing I’m going to change your mind on being friends with me.” He said.
“Yeah good luck with that.” I spitted out trying not to laugh. I felt bad for sounding rude, but at the same time. Whatever.
“Thank you very much!” Blaighton said and took arms with me. He pulled me through the parking lot and took me to his truck. “Get in, we’re eating and then going bowling.” He smiled and helped me into the truck. Isnt this k********g? I went along with him, it’s not like I really had any plans.
We were driving to a Thai place that was one of my favorite restraunts to eat at. Once we got there we sat in a booth, I asked for some tea and he had a coke. It was nice, we talked about school and what he liked about sports. I made him promise not to ask too many questions about me. There wasn’t a rule on me not being able to tell him anything, but it was just something that I only wanted someone special to know. Plus how could I know if I could trust him? What if he told everyone what I was and what I did? Not that anyone would believe it, but I didn’t want to become the laughing stock of the school.
Who knows, he might be good. He made me laugh a couple of times, it was nice to get out. I’ll admit I’m kind of glad he kidn*pped me for the time being.
After dinner and driving to the bowling alley, we saw that there was a bowling league going on. Instead of bowling he pulled a twenty from the ATM and cashed it in for coins for the arcade next door to the bowling alley. Blaighten opened the door for me and let me walk in first, I blushed and tried to hide my grin. He handed me a cup of coins and told me to go wherever I wanted. So I walked around and looked at the machines, finally choosing a PLINKO game. All I had to do was put a coin in and if it landed in the right spot a bunch of other coins would fall in and give me tickets. Then if I get the coin in each slot (each letter of plinko was a slot for the coin), a wheel spins and determines how many bonus tickets you get.
While playing my game, I watched Blaighton play guitar hero. I was smiling until he looked over at me, then I stopped and looked away. I instantly felt butterflies and got scared a little. I knew what was waiting at the end of this date, a kiss. Well I guess it doesn’t have to happen but know he’s going to attempt to. My game lit up as I had just gotten a PLINKO, I cheered at myself and waited as the wheel spun. I stood up as the spinner stopped at 75 tickets, almost 150. Either way I got bonus tickets on top of dumping a pile of coins of the ramp and into the part where they get counted for tickets. I think its five tickets a coin, which would be great. I knelt down and pulled my tickets from the machine and stood back up. I grabbed my cup of coins and walked around to look for another fun game, and then I saw air hockey. Looking around I saw Blaighton walking around like me. I waved him over and pointed to the air hockey machine. He smiled and we both walked over to the game.
“Ready to lose?” he asked. I put a hand on the table and looked back up at him.
“Yes, you are.” I smiled and chuckled along with him. He grabbed three coins from his cup and pushed them into the machine, the table vibrated and then I felt cool air on my hand. I grabbed the hockey puck and a white handle to hit it with, Blaighten was down and ready to play.
I managed to hit the puck into my own goal three times before finally getting a goal that actually counted for me. Blaighton had to get two more goals and he would win, I needed six. So maybe I’m not the best at this game, but it was still fun to play. Especially when he hit the puck so hard it flew off the table and rolled onto the other side of the room. I laughed as I watched him chase it down, he stumbled a couple times and finally grabbed it. As he handed me the puck he looked at my arm, “Whats that?” he asked. I looked down and saw a name on my right arm and got a slight vision. I was to stop someone from dying when it wasn’t their time, typically suicides.
“Uhm, its just marker. It’s a name for my work, a client.” I said in somewhat of a hurry. I grabbed my bag and headed for the door with Blaighton hot on my heels.
“Where do I need to take you? A nursing home? A house? A morgue?” he asked. I smiled and looked at him. “I never saw you write it down.” he also mentioned.
“I’m actually good, its not far of a walk. I promise, today was fun. Thank you for it, I really needed this.” I grinned at him and then awkwardly walked into him for a hug. I pulled away before he could say anything else and took off, once I was around the corner I whisped away.
