MISS MERRIMAN INTERVENESWhen the company assembled for dinner, Alice, well rested and really looking quite her best in the red dress, with a very little rouge and lipstick artfully applied by Phoebe, came into the green drawing-room with much more confidence than she had felt on the previous night. Mr. Johns had been very nice to her in the morning. Lady Pomfret had been very nice to her when they went for a walk. Julian had given her a wonderful and interesting afternoon in the North Attic, which was not really at all cold. Tea had been even exciting, with whisky in her teacup and everyone fussing. And then Julian, after telling her that she was decent, had practically committed suicide for her sake, and what more could a heroine want.
