Several passages were probably actionable and his lordship’s criticisms of his colleagues in a short-lived Government which he had once adorned were unprintable. But if he could get Lord Pomfret’s consent to a few alterations and excisions, the book, with Lord Pomfret’s name, would have in his practised opinion a very good chance. This delicate matter would best be treated, he felt, by a personal interview, so he wrote to Lord Pomfret saying he would be at Barchester at the Deanery from Saturday to Monday and would, if convenient, come and see him on the Saturday afternoon.
