The fire engine driver and his lieutenant could see the glow in the night sky three minutes after Engine Two left the station. The veteran firefighter, in the jump seat behind the driver, was too busy to turn and see what the men in the cab were seeing. He was buckling his turnout coat, pulling on his Nomex hood, cinching the harness straps on his air pack, slipping the lanyard of his face mask around his neck. He saw only what he was doing and, when he looked up in the direction of the hose bed, reflections of their red, white, and blue lights bouncing off the mid-ship control panel. The rookie, in the matching jump seat on the other side of the engine housing, behind their officer, was too nervous and too busy donning his brand new gear to look anywhere or see anything.
