Lawrence The hallway was nearly empty now—just faint echoes of footsteps disappearing around corners. I watched Zee vanish around the bend, her backpack slung over one shoulder, her head low. Probably already doubting herself and the decision she just made. Good. That kind of second-guessing would make her easier to break. I stepped out from the shadows, just where the busted light overhead flickered every few seconds. I’d been standing there for a while—listening. Waiting. Blake turned at the sound of my shoes against the floor. Her face was unreadable, but I grinned slowly, letting the satisfaction I felt at the moment show. “Well done,” I said, voice smooth, laced with mockery. “That was… a performance worthy of an award,” I told her.
