Balford City was located less than a hundred miles from the arsenal. It was separated from adjacent counties on two sides by two rivers and a low mountain area northeast. South of the city was an agricultural region that made the city an independent entity from the rest of the state. Anything could grow there and so the residents of Balford never had to depend too much on interstate importation to thrive. It was not an old city like New York, Boston, or even Houston, but Balford had quickly developed into an industrial jewel of the southeast, more so for its high immigrant ratio. It was one of the great cities of America…until the virus. Compared to the towns and counties and other less known cities, Balford was able to tide over the first few years of the pandemic.
