The roar of the crowd echoed through the Moon Crown Temple long after Nysera stepped down from the First Trial.
She had survived.
Not only survived but won.
The elders had expected her to fail. The nobles had whispered that the rejected she-wolf would disgrace herself before the Moon Goddess. Even Alpha Kael had watched in stunned silence as she emerged from the sacred ruins with the glowing Moonstone in her hands.
Now every pair of eyes followed her.
Some with admiration.
Most with fear.
Nysera ignored them all.
Each step sent sharp pain through her bruised body. Her shoulder still bled beneath the torn fabric of her dress, and her legs trembled from exhaustion. But she refused to show weakness.
Weak wolves didn’t survive.
She had learned that lesson the night Kael rejected her before the entire Silver Fang Pack.
“You may rest until sunset.”
The High Priestess’s voice echoed across the temple.
“Then the Second Trial shall begin.”
Gasps rippled through the gathering.
“So soon?”
“She’s barely standing.”
“No one has ever faced two trials in one day.”
Nysera lifted her head.
“If that’s what the Moon Goddess demands,” she said calmly, “then I’m ready.”
The High Priestess studied her with unreadable eyes.
“You have courage.”
“I have no choice.”
Silence settled between them.
Then the old woman smiled faintly.
“Perhaps.”
Kael couldn’t take his eyes off her.
She should have been celebrating.
Instead, she sat alone beneath an ancient silver tree, quietly wrapping strips of cloth around her wounded arm.
No servants.
No healers.
No one helping her.
His wolf growled painfully inside him.
Go to her.
His fists clenched.
He had no right.
He had destroyed that right himself.
Yet his feet carried him toward her before he could stop them.
Nysera sensed him immediately.
“You don’t need to say anything.”
Her voice remained calm.
“I came because—”
“Because you pity me?”
Kael stopped.
“No.”
“Because you regret rejecting me?”
He couldn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than words ever could.
Nysera laughed softly.
“I thought so.”
She stood, ignoring the pain.
“Whatever you’re feeling now… keep it.”
Her silver eyes met his.
“I don’t need it anymore.”
Then she walked away.
Leaving Kael standing beneath the tree, feeling more defeated than he had after any battle.
From the temple balcony, someone watched everything.
A tall man dressed entirely in black.
His golden eyes narrowed as Nysera disappeared into the corridor.
“It can’t be…”
He whispered to himself.
“The Moon Goddess has finally awakened her.”
Around his neck hung an ancient crest.
Not the emblem of Silver Fang.
Nor any neighboring pack.
It belonged to the forgotten Royal Bloodline.
He turned toward his guard.
“Prepare the carriage.”
“Your Highness?”
“We’re bringing her home.”
As sunset painted the sky crimson, drums echoed across the sacred mountain.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Every werewolf gathered once more.
Torches illuminated a massive circular arena carved into the mountain itself.
Unlike the First Trial, there were no ruins.
No puzzles.
Only smooth black stone stained by centuries of blood.
The atmosphere felt… wrong.
Nysera stepped forward.
The moment her foot crossed the arena’s edge, the ground vibrated beneath her.
The High Priestess raised her staff.
“The Second Trial…”
Her voice thundered.
“…is the Trial of Blood.”
The crowd fell completely silent.
Even the elders looked uneasy.
Nysera frowned.
“What must I do?”
The High Priestess pointed toward the enormous iron gate at the opposite end of the arena.
“You must defeat whatever emerges.”
The gate shook violently.
Metal groaned.
Something enormous slammed against it from the inside.
Boom!
The spectators gasped.
Another impact.
BOOM!
Dust rained from the stone walls.
Whatever was trapped inside…
…was desperate to escape.
Nysera slowly drew the Moon Blade she had earned in the first trial.
Its silver edge glowed beneath the rising moon.
She steadied her breathing.
“You can do this,” she whispered to herself.
The gate began to open.
Chains snapped one by one.
The growl that emerged wasn’t like any wolf she’d ever heard.
It sounded…
Human.
The gate burst open.
Everyone froze.
Nysera’s heartbeat stopped.
Standing inside the shadows wasn’t a beast.
It was a man.
Tall.
Barefoot.
His wrists were bound by broken silver chains.
His glowing crimson eyes locked onto hers.
Then he smiled.
“You finally came.”
The entire arena gasped.
Nysera had never seen him before.
Yet somehow…
He spoke as though he had been waiting for her all his life.
