Rory’s breath quickened as she stared at the figure standing before her. Cloaked in shadows, its face hidden beneath a hood, the presence radiated menace. Rory’s mind raced quickly, she was terrified, confused, desperate to understand what was happening. Her heart pounded in her chest, and fear gripping her like a vice.
“Who are you?” she demanded again, her voice trembling as her eyes flicked between the figure and the ropes now loose around her wrists. “What do you want from me?”
The figure remained silent, its stillness unnerving. The air around them felt thick, charged with an energy Rory couldn’t explain, but every instinct told her it was wrong. She was free now, able to leave, but something about the figure held her there, something that felt larger than her fear.
“Tell me who you are!” Rory’s voice rose with panic and frustration, her demand growing louder as she stepped back, keeping her eyes fixed on the figure.
The figure moved, just one step forward, but it was enough to send a surge of panic through Rory’s body. She could feel the air around them tense, the shadows in the room deepening as if they were alive, responding to the figure’s presence. Her heart raced, her breath quick and shallow. Then, just as the figure opened its mouth to speak, the door to the room flew open with a loud crash.
Lucian stormed in, his brown eyes burning with urgency. “Rory!”
The shout jolted her, and suddenly, everything around her shifted. Her surroundings blurred, the hooded figure fading away as if it were never there. Rory gasped, her vision clearing, and found herself back in the dim room. Lucian stood before her, his expression hard and focused. He didn’t waste a second, drawing a knife from his belt and slashing through the ropes still wrapped tightly around her.
With a sharp intake of breath, Rory sat upright, fully awake now, her mind struggling to make sense of what had just happened. Was it real? Was it a dream?
“What…what just happened?” she asked shakily, confusion and fear swirling in her chest.
“No time to explain,” Lucian said, his voice tight with tension. He grabbed her arm and yanked her to her feet, pulling her toward the door. “We need to get out of here, now.”
Rory stumbled after him, her mind spinning as she tried to process everything that had just happened. The hooded figure, the strange energy in the room , had that all been in her mind? The reality around her felt too fragile now, as if the dream and this moment had merged into one confusing nightmare.
“Lucian!” Rory cried, her voice breaking as he dragged her through the dim hallways. “Tell me what’s going on! Who was that in the room? You’re hurting me!”
Lucian didn’t slow down. He pushed open the back door with his shoulder, leading her outside where a black SUV sat with its engine running, lights on, piercing the darkness. “Get in,” he ordered, shoving her into the passenger seat with swift efficiency. “We don’t have time to talk right now.”
Rory barely had a chance to catch her breath before Lucian slammed the door shut and climbed into the driver’s seat. His movements were swift, purposeful, like a man running out of time. He floored the gas, and the SUV shot forward, speeding down a narrow road that wound through thick woods.
Rory’s head spun with questions, but no clear thoughts would form in her mind. “Lucian!” she shouted above the roar of the engine. “Where are we going? What just happened? I—I saw someone in the room, in my dream! What is going on?”
Lucian’s jaw tightened as he gripped the steering wheel, his eyes locked on the road ahead. “Vampires,” he said flatly, his voice thick with tension. “They’ve come through the portal from the Underworld. And they’re after you, Rory.”
Rory’s blood ran cold. Vampires? After her? “Vampires? What do you mean they’re after me? Why?”
Lucian’s expression hardened further as he turned a sharp corner, the SUV skidding slightly on the gravel. “They believe you’re responsible for the recent killings. There’s a bounty on your head.”
Rory’s heart dropped. Killings? Bounty? Nothing made sense. “That’s impossible!” she gasped, shaking her head. “I haven’t killed anyone! The vampires I’ve fought… they attacked me! I had no choice!”
“I know that,” Lucian growled, his knuckles white as he tightened his grip on the wheel. “But they don’t care. They’ve been told you’re the one behind the murders, and they’re determined to bring you in. Dead or alive.”
Rory felt like the world was spinning out of control. “Who would say that about me? What makes them so sure I’m involved?”
Lucian glanced at her, his eyes dark and filled with something Rory couldn’t quite place, was it worry? Regret? “It doesn’t matter who. What matters is they believe it, and they’re not stopping until they get you.”
Rory pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady her breathing, trying to make sense of the chaos swirling around her. “But why me?” she whispered, more to herself than to Lucian. “I’m nobody. Why would they think I’m responsible?”
Lucian was quiet for a moment, his eyes focused on the dark road ahead. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, almost hesitant. “Because I think, no... They think you’re something more. They think you’re… special.”
Rory turned to look at him, confusion knotting in her stomach. “Special? What do you mean?”
Lucian’s jaw clenched as if he were struggling to find the right words. “There are rumors, Rory. Rumors of an ancient power, a person tied to a prophecy that could change everything. They think you might be connected to it.”
Rory blinked, her mind racing. “A prophecy? You can’t be serious. I’m just me. There’s nothing special about me, Lucian!”
He glanced at her again, his expression grim. “That’s what I thought at first too. But now… now I’m not so sure.”
Rory stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying,” Lucian said slowly, “that someone out there thinks you’re important enough to kill for. They think you’re part of something bigger, something dangerous. And until we figure out what that is, we need to stay ahead of them.”
Rory’s mind spun with confusion and fear. None of this made sense. How could she be tied to something like this? She was just trying to survive after being hunted by vampires, not caught up in some prophecy or grand scheme.
“Where are we going?” she asked, her voice shaking as the SUV sped deeper into the forest, the trees growing taller, their branches intertwining to create a dark canopy overhead.
“There’s a safe house,” Lucian replied, his voice steady but tense. “It’s hidden deep in the forest, protected by wards. We’ll be safe there… for a while.”
Rory swallowed hard, fear curling tighter around her heart. “And after that? What happens next?”
Lucian’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. “After that, we figure out our next move. We plan. But right now, getting you away from those vampires is our only priority.”
Rory wasn’t convinced. “What if they catch us before we get there? What if they’re faster than we think?”
“They won’t,” Lucian said firmly, though there was a flicker of doubt in his eyes that made Rory’s stomach twist.
The SUV’s headlights cut through the darkness, but the woods around them seemed to press in, the shadows deeper, more oppressive with every passing mile. Rory glanced at Lucian, noticing the tension in his jaw, the way his eyes darted to the rearview mirror every few seconds. He was scared, just as scared as she was. And that terrified her even more.
As the silence stretched between them, Rory’s mind raced, trying to make sense of everything that had happened. The dream. The hooded figure, had that been real? Was someone trying to warn her? Or had her mind conjured up that terror in response to the fear gripping her now?
Her thoughts were interrupted when the SUV’s headlights suddenly illuminated something in the darkness ahead. Rory’s breath caught in her throat as she saw several figures emerging from the trees, their eyes glowing with an unnatural light, their predatory smiles flashing in the night.
“Lucian…” Rory’s voice trembled as she reached out to grab his arm. “Lucian, they’re here.”
Lucian’s eyes widened as he saw the vampires blocking the road. His foot slammed on the brake, and the SUV skidded to a halt just a few feet from the nearest vampire. The creatures stood there, their eyes gleaming, fangs bared in anticipation.
“Stay in the car,” Lucian ordered, his voice low and filled with urgency.
