CHAPTER 7: TWO MEN, ONE IDENTITY

1195 Words
The sound of a black car engine cut through the silence in front of the house. John slowly turned his head. His body was already exhausted. But his eyes still had the strength to look. The car stopped in front of the gate. For a few seconds, no one said anything. Even the guards turned to look at it with respect. The car door slowly opened. One foot stepped out. John held his breath. There was something familiar about that movement. The way the person stepped out. The way he stood. The way he looked at his house. Everything was normal to him. They were things John knew better than anyone else. Then the man stepped out completely. And John’s world began to slowly fall apart. It was him. The same face. The same eyes. The same walk. Even the way he adjusted his jacket after getting out of the car was his habit. John slowly shook his head. “No…” His voice came out with difficulty. “It’s impossible.” The man closed the car door. One of the guards greeted him. “Welcome, boss.” That word struck John like a blow. Boss. That was the name people used to call him. Not this man. Him. The new man smiled and greeted the guards. That same smile John had. The smile his wife knew. The smile his child loved. John felt tears gathering in his eyes. He had fought through bullets. He had escaped people who wanted to kill him. He had walked while bleeding for only one reason… To get here. But now that he had arrived… He found someone else had already arrived before him. Johana moved closer to the new man. “Darling, something has happened.” The man looked at her gently. “What happened?” That voice… It was his. John closed his eyes for a second. He wished everything was just a dream. He wished he would wake up back in the place where he had been imprisoned. But when he opened his eyes… The truth was still there. The man looked at the real John. Their eyes met. Two people. One face. Two different lives. The man also remained silent. Because even for him, this situation was not normal. “Who is this?” He asked. John wanted to answer. He wanted to scream. “I am the person you see!” But his voice refused to come out. Because at that exact moment… Amara appeared at the doorway. His child. Her eyes lit up when she saw the man. “Daddy!” And with the happiness of a child who knew nothing… She ran toward the man who had her father’s face. The real John remained standing there. Watching. Hurting. Because now he had seen something worse than death. Death would have ended his pain. But this… This was watching someone else live the life he had fought for. Amara ran toward the new man without hesitation. Her little feet hit the ground with excitement. “Daddy!” Her voice was pure. It was the voice of a child who had no doubts. The real John stood frozen. He didn’t move. He could barely breathe. He was waiting for something he already knew would never happen. He waited for Amara to turn around. He waited for his child to look at him and say: “Daddy, where have you been?” But it never happened. Amara reached the new man and threw herself into his arms. The man bent down and lifted her up. “Daddy is here, my daughter.” He said softly. Amara laughed. She wrapped her little arms around his neck. John felt something break inside him. His eyes filled with tears. Not because his child was happy. That was what he wanted. What hurt him was that the happiness was now going to someone else. Someone who had his face. Someone who had taken his place. John lowered his head. His injured hand slipped to his side. The pain from his wound no longer mattered. The pain in his heart was much greater. “My daughter…” He whispered. But no one heard him. Johana watched him carefully. She saw his tears. She saw the way he looked at Amara. For a brief moment, her heart hesitated. Because this man was a stranger to her… But the love he had for the child was real. There was no acting. No deception. There was only a man who had lost something incredibly important. But before she could do anything, the new John stepped closer to Amara. He looked at the real John. His face showed deep confusion. “What is going on?” He asked. His voice was calm, but his eyes were alert. The real John stared at him. For the first time, they were standing close. He saw everything. The small mark on his face. The eyes. The mannerisms. Even the way he tilted his head. It was like seeing himself from the outside. John laughed bitterly. “You…” He said in a broken voice. “Do you know who I am?” The new John remained silent. Johana spoke: “This man came here claiming that he is you.” “He knows our names.” “He knows about Amara.” “He knows things about our family that an outsider could never know.” The new John looked at him again. His face showed confusion. Then he asked: “What is your name?” That question made the real John smile painfully. “You want to know my name?” He struggled to breathe. “John Jacob Diksoni.” A heavy silence filled the air. The new John did not answer immediately. He stared at him for a long time. Then he slowly said: “That…” “Is my name.” The guards looked at each other. Johana held Amara’s hand tighter. The real John felt his legs trembling. He wanted to say so much. He wanted to explain everything. But his body was betraying him. The blood he had lost. The hunger. The exhaustion. All the pain from that day came crashing back at once. He tried to stand properly. But his vision began to fade. Johana noticed. “Are you hurt?” She asked, not understanding why she still felt compassion for him. John did not answer. He looked at Amara one last time. The child was still in the arms of the new John. Then he whispered: “I came back for you…” “I didn’t fight death just to end up empty-handed…” His voice faded. His body swayed. And before he could completely collapse… The new John suddenly moved forward. Because for the first time… He had seen something that could not be faked. The pain in the man standing before him was the pain of someone who had lost his entire life. And a question began forming in everyone’s mind: If this man is not John… Why does he know everything? And if this man really is John… Then who is the person living inside their house?
