The weeks following Laura's conversation with Williams about marriage were filled with uncertainty.
Although Williams had promised that he would think about it, he never brought up the topic again. Every day that passed made Laura more anxious.
She tried not to overthink it.
Perhaps he needed more time.
Perhaps he was planning something.
Or perhaps he had decided that he wasn't ready for marriage at all.
The last possibility frightened her the most.
Several times, she considered bringing up the subject again, but each time she stopped herself. She didn't want to pressure him. She didn't want him to think she was desperate.
So she waited.
And hoped.
One Thursday afternoon, while Laura was working on a painting at the company, her phone vibrated.
A smile immediately appeared on her face when she saw Williams' name.
She quickly answered.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Laura."
His voice sounded unusually cheerful.
"Hi."
"I was wondering if you're free tomorrow evening."
Laura's heart skipped a beat.
"Yes, I am."
"Good. I'd like to take you somewhere."
"Somewhere?"
Williams laughed softly.
"Just trust me."
Laura smiled despite her growing nervousness.
"Okay."
After hanging up, she stared at her phone for several seconds.
A strange feeling settled inside her.
She couldn't explain it.
Part of her was excited.
Another part was nervous.
What if he wanted to talk about marriage?
What if he wanted to end the relationship?
The thought immediately made her stomach tighten.
Ever since she brought up marriage, things had felt different between them.
What if she had pushed him too far?
What if he regretted agreeing to date her?
The questions haunted her for the rest of the day.
The following evening arrived faster than she expected.
After work, Laura rushed home and began preparing.
She spent almost an hour choosing what to wear.
Eventually, she settled on a beautiful gown that made her feel elegant without appearing overly formal.
After getting ready, she looked at herself in the mirror.
Her heart was racing.
"Everything will be fine," she whispered to herself.
Still, the nervous feeling refused to leave.
When she arrived at the restaurant, she immediately realized something was different.
Very different.
The restaurant looked nothing like it usually did.
The entrance was decorated with flowers.
Soft music filled the air.
Elegant lights illuminated every corner of the building.
Several decorations hinted at some sort of celebration.
Laura stopped walking.
Confusion filled her face.
"What is going on?"
People moved around happily.
Some guests were smiling.
Others appeared to be waiting for something.
Laura's nervousness increased.
Then she saw Williams.
He was standing near one of the decorated tables.
The moment he saw her, he smiled.
Laura smiled back.
Although her heart was beating so fast she thought everyone around her could hear it.
Williams walked toward her.
"You look beautiful."
Laura felt her cheeks warm.
"Thank you."
Before she could say anything else, Williams gently hugged her and placed a soft kiss on her cheek.
"Come with me."
He led her toward a beautifully decorated table.
Laura sat down.
The entire situation felt strange.
Not bad.
Just strange.
Almost as if everyone knew something she didn't.
Williams signaled one of the waiters.
A few moments later, a covered plate was placed in front of Laura.
She frowned.
The waiter hadn't even taken her order.
"What's this?"
Williams simply smiled.
"Go ahead."
Laura looked at him suspiciously.
Then slowly lifted the cover.
At first, she thought the plate was empty.
Then she noticed the elegant writing in the center.
Her eyes widened.
The spoon slipped from her fingers and landed on the floor with a loud clatter.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Unable to breathe.
Written beautifully on the plate were the words:
Will You Marry Me, Laura?
The entire restaurant suddenly erupted into applause.
Laura looked around in complete shock.
People were smiling.
Some had already brought out their phones.
Others were cheering.
Tears immediately gathered in her eyes.
This couldn't be real.
For years she had dreamed of moments like this.
Yet now that it was actually happening, she couldn't believe it.
Slowly, she looked at Williams.
He was smiling.
Then he stood up.
To Laura's surprise, he dropped to one knee.
The restaurant became silent.
Everyone waited.
Everyone watched.
"Laura," Williams said softly.
"You've been an important part of my life, and I want us to continue building a future together."
His words made her emotional.
The tears she had been holding back finally escaped.
"Will you marry me?"
Laura covered her mouth.
She could barely contain her emotions.
Every childhood dream.
Every lonely night.
Every moment she had spent hoping someone would truly choose her.
It all seemed worth it.
Without thinking twice, she nodded repeatedly.
"Yes."
The crowd erupted into applause once more.
"Yes!"
Williams smiled and removed a ring from a small box.
Carefully, he slipped it onto her finger.
The moment the ring settled into place, Laura felt as though she were living inside a dream.
A dream she never wanted to wake up from.
The rest of the evening passed in a blur.
There were congratulations.
Photographs.
Laughter.
And endless excitement.
Laura couldn't stop staring at the ring.
Every time she looked at it, she smiled.
Eventually, Williams drove her home.
Throughout the ride, she kept talking excitedly about wedding ideas, future plans, and possibilities.
Williams listened quietly.
Occasionally smiling.
Occasionally nodding.
But Laura was too happy to notice anything unusual.
The following day, they informed her family about the engagement.
Charles was overjoyed.
The moment he heard the news, he stood up and embraced his daughter.
"I'm so happy for you."
Laura almost cried again.
"Thank you, Dad."
Charles spent the rest of the evening discussing wedding preparations and future plans.
For the first time in a long while, the house felt warm.
Happy.
Hopeful.
Maria's reaction, however, was very different.
Although she congratulated Laura, the smile on her face seemed forced.
There was no excitement in her eyes.
No genuine happiness.
She simply maintained a pleasant expression because Charles was present.
The last thing she wanted was an argument with her husband.
Patricia's reaction was equally strange.
She smiled.
She congratulated Laura.
She even hugged her.
Yet something about her behavior felt unnatural.
As though she were acting.
As though she were hiding something.
Fortunately, Laura was far too happy to notice.
Her entire focus was on the wedding.
On Williams.
On the future she had always dreamed of.
When Williams suggested that most of the wedding preparations should take place at Laura's family home, she found the idea a little unusual.
After all, many couples preferred making arrangements elsewhere.
Still, he insisted.
"It'll be easier this way."
Laura didn't fully understand his reasoning, but eventually agreed.
After all, it was their wedding.
And she trusted him completely.
Over the following weeks, excitement spread throughout the company.
Everyone knew Laura was getting married.
Employees congratulated her daily.
Friends wished her happiness.
Even people she barely knew stopped to offer their blessings.
For the first time in her life, Laura felt seen.
Important.
Loved.
As she lay in bed one evening, staring at the engagement ring on her finger, a smile spread across her face.
Everything was finally falling into place.
Soon she would marry the man she loved.
Soon she would begin a new chapter of her life.
And for once, she believed nothing could take that happiness away from her.
Little did she know that fate was quietly preparing a storm powerful enough to shatter every dream she had built.
