CHAPTER TWO

1566 Words
With the past events and all that had happened to me the previous night I had no other choice than to visit Micheal's home to thank him, if not for his help that night I couldn't think of what the case would have been, I thought that so much had happened so I brought thanking him above everything else, that morning I wore the best gown that I had and that was a red velvet dress that I had worn once to a dinner with my work mates, with a red pair of shoes to match and a red purse I stood in front of the large dark gates of the mansion with nervousness in my heart, before long two guards were standing before me and asking me questions as to why I had come, "Hi, I'm here to see Mr Michael Rodriguez, we were together yesterday" I said trying to clarify my reasons for coming, "And did he ask you to be here by this time?" One of the guards asked with a stern look on his face,( the guards were really harsh and rude as with their expressions,) "No, he didn't request for my presence, am just here to give him something" I replied frankly, "Well then you can hand it over, we give it to him" the guard said, it was like they didn't want me in the house, "No, I have a very confidential parcel to give to him, you shouldn't have it in your care" I said lying since it was the only by which i could extend my gratitude to the young man who had saved my life, "Alright, you can come in" the guard said overlooking me suspiciously, now for the sake of record and history, I had to say that i had never been to an house so large and magnificent, it was totally outstanding, it was painted in a reddish color that matched that of my dress, as the guards led me away, I feasted my eyes with the magnificent structure before me, it was mind blowing, who could have thought of building a mansion like no other, while all this happened I had forgotten that I was there to see someone and not the house, all this thoughts were flowing through my mind up until I was ushered into the mansion itself, I was asked to sit by one of the guards and in no time Michael Rodriguez was standing before me, I rose to my feet and shook his hand while introducing myself, "I'm Emily Carter, we met yesterday at the alley" I said smiling, he looked at me confused and bursted out into laughter, I was the next to look confused as I didn't understand why he had to laugh, "I'm sorry I just thought it was hilarious that I couldn't remember who you were, I knew the guards wouldn't allow a stranger In here without no reason" when he said this I became relieved, "I brought you this to show my gratitude" I said handing a bottle of champagne to him, the best my brother had, "But this isn't enough, it's the least of things you could possibly give me" he replied looking at the wrapped object with disgust, I stared at him in disbelief, never had I thought that he could refuse such a gift, "You shouldn't be surprised that I rejected the gift, besides it's just below my standard" he said looking down at me, it was a surprise to me as I looked at his face, there was no smile plastered on it like the previous night, only an expression of disgust, "I want something more, something big and expensive, something people of my standards cherish and praise, even if it isn't physical" Michael said as he fell into a sofa nearby, I couldn't believe it, how could he be so ungrateful, "I know what you're thinking, and I want you to know that I'm not ungrateful, I'm just telling you what I had expected you to present" he said and sighed, with within these short period of silence, I seized the opportunity to look around my environment, the exterior design of the mansion was beautiful but then again the interior was mind blowing, everything was painted in red, and no other colour apart from the colour red was to be seen, it was like the thick red pool of blood that was before me the day I met my saviour, although it reminded me of that horrible night I remembered that it was the colour red which was also a symbol for love, this made me ask, "Did you demand for the house to be painted red?" "of course, its the only colour I like best" he replied shifting his gaze from me to the red walls, I was just about to place the gift on the table to take my leave when he said, "Don't drop it leave with it" there was nothing I could say as I had become short of words to say, reluctantly I took my leave, a disappointed expression hanging over my face, there was only one place to be and that was my work place. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The warm smell of drugs and stale sweat reminded me of a lot of things that brought a smile to my face, I had almost forgotten that my gift had been rejected, as I made my way to my office I thought about every that had happened to me in the past, the tape incident, losing my own mother, running away from home with my brother for fear of being killed the way my mother was killed by my father, I felt depressed and weighed down by e everything that had happened to me, if Michael wasn't present at the scene that night, I would have been a victim of r**e a second time, walking into my office I fell I to the chair and began to work, the work kept my mind off things and makes me think about what the future is going to be like with or without a husband in my life. I picked up a file from the edge of the desk and resolved to working on it, as I opened it someone stumbled in like he or she had a really devastating news to tell me and then I thought to herself if the day could grow anymore worse, it was Joe a work mate of mine, I had gotten an employment even before he did and now he had been promoted before me, at the beginning of this horrible change I felt like my whole life was going to come crashing down but then Joe tried to make me understand that it happened like that In common cases, now he was earning twice of what I earned, "Hey, good morning" joe greeted with a huge happy smile plastered over his face, "good morning Joe how was your night ?" I said replying him with another question, "It was good, anyways someone dropped something for you just after you walked in" he said dropping a red parcel before me, I couldn't have guessed who had sent it at first but then staring intently at the red parcel a name popped up in my head, MICHAEL RODRIGUEZ but why would he have sent a parcel when he didn't even know where I worked, I noticed that Joe was still waiting so I told him to leave, as soon as he left, I tore up the parcel and viewed its contents hungrily, the first item was a letter and the second was a lab coat that was fitted neatly into a see through white bag, I didn't need any of the items in the par el but I understood that to understand why he had sent it I needed to read the letter, curiously I tore the letters seal and read, From Micheal Rodriguez to Emily Carter : Emily, consider this as a token from me to you, with no strings attached I'm inviting you to work at my pharmaceutical company, the first day we met you confined in me that you were a nurse and that you knew a little about drugs, I was hoping you could come work in my company to pour a little of your k knowledge into the business, consider it as an offer. I didn't know what to do, I was shocked and dumbfounded, I never believed that he could have been so good to me, I never thought that I could ever find such an irresistible offer, it was a once in a life time offer for me, the address was written at the right side of the letter down at the bottom, excitedly I grabbed my bag and rushed out 9f the office, "where are you off to?" Joe asked confused at my behaviour which was weird to him, I didn't respond, I couldn't have responded because this was the most exciting moment of my life ever since I had been given birth tonight up until today, finally people would feel and smell the touch of luxury on me and I would finally be able to pull out my family name from the mud and stench of poverty, I would be rich!
