Darwin's POV
“I did, and I have my reasons for doing so in public,” I replied with a firm voice.
The officer was silent for a while. He wrote some things down before he spoke further.
“Tell me, what warranted such nuanced behavior, Mr. Darwin?” He asked with a mirrored glare while a breeze stroked his skin.
“Mr. Davis is a bully. Didn't he tell you that he publicly assaulted a woman?” I raised my eyebrows while I laid my hand on the table before me.
The officer's face shrank with surprise. “How did that happen?” He was interested in getting to the root of the matter.
“Mr. Davis poured hot coffee on Miss Veronica’s clothes, and that prompted my behavior towards him publicly. I couldn't stand to watch him assault a woman in that manner. Nah, I can't take it.” I flexed my muscles.
The police officer grunted with an air of displeasure. “We are done here.” He stood on his feet and walked out of the questioning room.
After many minutes, he returned to me. I watched him as he sat on his seat.
“Mr. Darwin, we realized what you said was true. But you should have done better. However, you can take your leave now.” He said, standing on his feet and walking out of the questioning.
My lips curved with a dark smile. ‘I knew it wouldn't take such a long time before getting out of this messy cell. Davis has a lot to answer for.’ After mumbling to myself. I stood on my feet and walked out of the cell as a free man.
Just when I stepped out, Veronica, my secretary, was waiting in a car outside the cell. I was surprised when I saw this.
Veronica walked up to me. “I am sorry for dragging you into this mess, Mr. Darwin.” She blinked her sexy eyes. A breeze blew her hair sideways.
“I told you to stay in the office. Why did you violate my orders?” I questioned while my face stiffened up.
“If I hadn't come here. I bet you would have used 24 hours in the cell and later be found guilty.” Her reply was sharp.
That came to me as a surprise. With an eye blink, I asked, “What did you do? Miss Veronica.”
“I did what it took to get you out of there. You said my presence wouldn't mean a thing, but I have to prove you wrong.” She bent her head stylishly.
I expelled some air from my nostrils. “Are you expecting me to appreciate you now?” I shot a poor glare at her. Taking a concise glance at her from head to toe.
“If you get your home lessons right, I don't have to teach you what to do.” She responded sarcastically.
I grunted inaudibly. My phone started ringing. Checking it, I realized it was a call from Josphat Cooperation. I picked up the call.
“Hello, speak…” I said, tucking my left hand into my pocket.
“We are in need of your help, sir. Our company has run into some major losses. I would love to come and explain this to you in person.” The executive manager of Josphat Company explained.
“Okay. I will be in my office.” I said, with some thoughts running through my mind. I ended the call.
Veronica and I got into the car.
“Sir, you have a meeting at the office.” She informed me.
“Is it an individual meeting or a company meeting?” My tone raised slightly.
“It's a company meeting for the Immersion deal.” She explained and relaxed her back on the chair.
“Okay.” Then both of us became silent. But there was an issue of concern in my mind, and I did not know the reason she wasn't saying anything about it at all.
“Miss Veronica, I would like to see you about a personal issue. Will you be available at night so we can talk?” I asked out of the blue.
Veronica shot a glare of surprise. “I will think about it.” Her reply was short.
The driver stopped at the front of the company. He opened the door while I stepped down.
Veronica's POV
My heart was filled with concern. When he asked to see me, I could feel how my heart hit against my chest with panic.
‘What could he be up to?’ That was my thought.
However, by the time we stepped into the company. Another visitor was waiting to meet with Mr. Darwin.
“Miss Veronica, please keep Mr. Martin's company till I am done with the meeting at hand.” Darwin expressed, pacing forward to his office.
I faced Mr. Martin. “Let us go to my office.” Saying that off my lips, he seemed to be lost in thoughts.
“Mr. Martins, Mr. Martin,” I called his name several times, and when I saw he wasn't responding, I had to tap him.
That called him out of his thoughts. “You are very beautiful, Miss Veronica. Do you mind going out with me?” He asked, rolling his eyes seductively.
I laughed inaudibly. ‘What is wrong with him? You have just met a woman now, and you want her in your bed. You must be out of your mind.’ I thought in my head before giving him a reply.
“That is not the reason we are here, sir. Kindly follow me.” I said, motioning forward.
He sighed. “I love your curves, Miss Veronica. And if you agree to be mine, you will enjoy the good things, Mr. Darwin can't offer you.” He continued to speak just to get me enticed.
“Stop flirting, Mr. Martins. I am not interested.” My response was sharp because I felt irritated.
“You are an omega, Miss Veronica. And I am sure no male counterpart will accept you to be his mate. Why don't you give in to me now to wash that reproach?” He raised his eyebrows and flexed his muscles.
Without a response, both of us walked into my office. Although I felt bad about what he said, and it brought memories of how I was rejected by Mr. Darwin.
‘Could being an omega be the reason for ill luck in relationships?’ I questioned myself, and at the time, I did not find the man before me attractive whatsoever.
‘But wait, if he can detect I am a wolf. Does it mean…?’ My eyes widened upon realization.
“What's your wolf rank?” I asked curiously.
“I, Martins, am the Alpha of the Howling Wolf Pack. I know you should have heard about them.” He introduced himself with pride in his voice. He wore a dark half-smile.
“Unfortunately, I don't know of any packs at all.” I said, while my dark past hovered on my face. Reminding me of how I was raised outside the pack.
That came as a surprise to Martins. “How could you be a wolf if you have not been in a pack before?” He raised his eyebrows, ready to hear about the dark background that I had.
“Enough of petty talk. What is your goal in being here?” I asked, trying to pry him out of the initial conversation.
“Miss Veronica, I want you to be my woman.” He spoke at the top of his voice, and at the same time, Darwin walked into that moment.
