Chapter 2: A Leap of Faith

1421 Words
As Liam opened his mouth to explain that he was actually a medical intern, two orderlies rushed in, their faces twisted with annoyance. "Liam Steele, you're just a trainee orderly. What are you doing here? Your incompetence could cost someone their life!" A middle-aged man, hearing this, flew into a rage. He shoved Liam aside, his words dripping with venom. "Goddammit! A male orderly, and still in training? Get the hell out of here before you delay my lady's emergency treatment. I'll kill you myself if anything happens to her!" Hannah Birch, who had just stepped outside, overheard the commotion. She scoffed, "Hmph, a few harsh words and you think you're something special?" As the orderlies prepared to wheel the young woman into the emergency room, Dr. Arthur Saint, the head of surgery, arrived on the scene. He'd just received a call from Hospital Director Victor Trent, informing him that George Fields' daughter had been in an accident and was en route to the hospital. The director wanted Arthur to personally oversee her treatment. Fields Corporation was the city's most powerful conglomerate, with tentacles reaching into every corner of Daisy Sun. If anything were to happen to the chairman's daughter on their watch, the consequences would be catastrophic. Dr. Saint hurried over to the middle-aged man. "Is this Chairman George Fields' daughter?" "Yes, it's Miss Fields. She's been in a traffic accident. Please, you must treat her immediately!" The man's voice was thick with urgency. Peter Green, Tina Fields' bodyguard, was responsible for her safety. But today, the young heiress had insisted on street racing, and he'd been powerless to stop her. Now, with her life hanging in the balance, Peter knew his own fate was equally precarious. Dr. Saint's expression grew even more grave. "Take her for a full body scan, then we'll prepare for diagnosis and treatment." "Dr. Saint, there's no time," Liam interjected, his focus solely on saving the young woman's life. "Her ribs are fractured and have punctured her lung. There's blood pooling in her chest cavity. We need to operate immediately if we want any chance of saving her." Dr. Saint cast a cold glare at Liam. "You're just an orderly. What right do you have to interfere?" Turning to one of the other staff members, he barked, "Orderly Lee, arrange for those scans immediately. We can't waste a single minute." As the orderlies whisked Miss Fields away to the examination room, Dr. Saint began preparing for surgery. This was his chance to shine, to forge connections with the city's elite. He couldn't afford to miss this opportunity. Fifteen minutes later, the test results were in. Hannah Birch watched with disdain as Liam was brushed aside, embarrassed by her son-in-law's behavior. She glanced at her daughter, a twinge of regret tugging at her heart. Why did Vanessa have to be so stubborn? Meanwhile, Dr. Saint stared at the report in his hands, his face burning with humiliation. Liam had been right – if they'd operated fifteen minutes ago, they might have saved her. Now, it seemed too late. The doctor found himself in an impossible situation. Operating now would likely prove fatal, but refusing to act wasn't an option either. Just then, a middle-aged man flanked by four imposing bodyguards strode purposefully towards the operating theater. His square-jawed face radiated authority – this was George Fields himself, chairman of Fields Corporation and Tina's father. "What's my daughter's condition?" His deep voice resonated through the hallway. Dr. Saint swallowed hard. "Chairman Fields, I'm afraid your daughter's situation is... critical. We may be too late." Though he wanted to attempt the surgery, he knew it was beyond his capabilities at this point. George Fields' eyes turned to ice. "Too late? What kind of hospital are you running here?" The chairman's powerful presence filled the room, his voice as cold as a winter storm. Dr. Saint broke into a cold sweat, but he knew the grim reality – whether they operated or not, the young woman's chances were slim. If he performed the surgery now, he'd bear the full weight of responsibility for her death. But if he refused, he could blame the delay on those who brought her in. With this in mind, Dr. Saint steeled his resolve. He couldn't risk the operation. "Chairman Fields, it's not that we lack the skill. She was simply brought in too late..." As Dr. Saint prepared to shift the blame, a voice cut through the tension. "Let me try." All eyes turned to the source – Liam Steele. George Fields studied Liam, noting his patient gown. "Is this man also a doctor?" Hannah Birch, realizing the gravity of the situation, spoke up quickly. "He's not. He's just a trainee orderly." Dr. Saint, eager to dodge responsibility, found himself faced with this fool who seemed determined to take it on. Even if the man had some unusual insight, how could a mere orderly possibly save her? "Mr. Fields, that's correct. He's only an orderly." George Fields fell silent upon hearing this, but his mind raced. His daughter's life hung by a thread, and he'd already reached out to a renowned medical expert known as the "Arthur of Rebirth." But even that legendary doctor would take time to arrive. No matter what, he wanted his daughter to receive treatment. "Chairman Fields, I guarantee I can save your daughter," Liam said, his voice steady and confident. Vanessa Hall, watching Liam prepare to enter the operating room, rushed forward to stop him. "What do you think you're doing?" she hissed. "Saving a life," Liam replied, his tone deadly serious. Vanessa knew Liam was just an orderly, with no formal surgical training. If she herself wasn't confident in performing this operation, how could Liam possibly manage it? Had the stress of the situation driven him to madness? But as she opened her mouth to protest further, she caught sight of the unwavering determination in Liam's eyes. Something in that gaze gave her pause, sparked a flicker of trust she couldn't explain. The words of caution died on her lips, replaced by a silent prayer that her instincts were right. Hannah Birch, however, felt no such compunction. "Stop trying to show off! This isn't some game – a person's life is at stake!" Peter Green, who had brought Tina Fields in, suddenly spoke up. "Chairman Fields, perhaps he really can help. When we first arrived, he took one look at Miss Fields and immediately diagnosed her condition. It was Dr. Saint who delayed treatment." "You..." Dr. Saint began to protest, but the words stuck in his throat. He knew he had made a grave error, and any explanation now would only damn him further. George Fields fixed Peter with an icy stare. "You're fired. Permanently. You'll never work in this city again." Peter fell to his knees, begging for mercy. "Please, Chairman Fields! Your daughter insisted... I had no choice! My family... my sick mother... I can't lose this job. I'm begging you!" Before he could finish, George's men dragged Peter away. Vanessa Hall found herself unable to stop Liam as he strode purposefully towards the operating room. He recognized this as his one chance to prove himself. As Liam quickly donned surgical gloves and prepared for the operation, George Fields stood silently, watching with a mixture of desperation and skepticism. Though Liam had never officially performed surgery before, the medical knowledge imparted by Arthur Saint's consciousness filled him with an eerie sense of confidence. The surgical team looked on in amazement as Liam worked with the precision and skill of a seasoned professional. Even Vanessa, who had initially doubted him, could only watch in awe. "Scalpel," Liam commanded, and after a moment's hesitation, a nurse handed it to him. The operation was intensely grueling, but Liam maintained laser-like focus throughout. Each incision was made with unerring accuracy, and after what felt like an eternity, he tied off the final suture. He stepped back, exhaling deeply. "It's done." The room fell into a stunned silence. George Fields, standing by the observation window, seemed to be holding his breath. After a long moment, Vanessa spoke up, her voice filled with disbelief and relief. "Her vitals are stabilizing. She's... she's going to make it." A wave of relief washed over the room, but Liam knew this was only the beginning. He had just taken his first step down a dangerous and unpredictable path, one that would challenge everything he thought he knew about himself and the world around him.
