“Mmm.” Mallory’s eyes closed and she relaxed against Ryan, wishing there was space for her to lie down in the wagon. But there wasn’t any extra room. Not that it mattered. Somehow she drifted off to sleep to be woken by Ryan, the wagon slowing to a stop. “What’s going on?” Brodie sat up, rubbing his eyes. “There’s a bear crossing the road about thirty metres ahead. If we’re lucky it’ll continue on its way,” the wagoner said. Brodie faced forward. “There’s only one. Why don’t we take it out while we’ve got surprise on our side?” “A pity we don’t have a spyglass to see how much health it has,” Ryan said.
