THE HUNT MOVES FIRST

. Chapter 10: The Hunt Moves First Ghost didn’t leave trails. Ghost left patterns. And tonight— For the first time— Those patterns made a mistake. The Signal Selene’s system lit up at 01:47 AM. Not a breach. Not an intrusion. A transmission. Short. Encrypted. But incomplete. “Pause it,” Selene said. Her tech froze the stream mid-flow. “Can you decode it?” “Partially,” he replied. “It’s layered—but something slipped through.” Selene stepped closer, eyes scanning the fragments. Coordinates. Time markers. Movement routes. A meeting. Across the city, Damian received the same alert. Different system. Same signal. “Trace it,” he ordered. “We’re trying,” Luca replied. “But it’s already moving.” Damian’s expression hardened. “Then we move faster.” The Intersection The location wasn’t random. It was a shipping terminal—active enough to hide movement, quiet enough to control it. Selene arrived first. Of course. She stood at the edge of the structure, watching containers stack like silent walls. Moments later— Damian stepped into the same space. No greeting. No acknowledgment. Just shared focus. “You got the signal,” he said. Selene nodded. “Ghost is meeting someone.” “Or baiting us,” Damian replied. Selene’s gaze sharpened slightly. “Same outcome.” Inside the Zone They moved in. Not together. But aligned. Selene took the upper path—catwalks, shadows, elevation. Damian stayed ground level—direct, controlled, ready. Two different styles. Same precision. A figure appeared between the containers. Hooded. Still. Waiting. Selene’s voice came low through comms. “Visual.” “Confirmed,” Damian replied. “Too exposed,” she added. “Agreed.” The figure moved. Not away. Deeper in. “Trap,” Damian said. Selene didn’t disagree. But she didn’t stop either. “Stay sharp,” she said. The Trigger The moment Damian stepped into the inner section— The lights cut. Total darkness. Then— Metal slammed. Barriers dropped. Entrances sealed. Selene moved instantly— Too late. She dropped from above— Landing inside the enclosure. Locked in. With him. Chapter 11: No Space Left to Hide The darkness didn’t last. Emergency lights flickered on. Low. Red. Distorting everything. The space was tight. Shipping containers arranged like walls. No clear exits. No signal outside. Selene stood a few feet away. Damian across from her. Closer than before. Too close for comfort. “Again,” he said. Selene exhaled slowly. “Expected.” “Prepared?” he asked. A slight pause. Then— “Yes.” The Realization A screen flickered to life on one of the container walls. Static. Then— Victor Hale. “Progress,” he said calmly. “You’re adapting faster this time.” Selene’s voice was cold. “Where’s Ghost?” Victor smiled faintly. “Closer than you think.” Damian stepped forward slightly. “Enough games.” Victor’s gaze shifted between them. “This isn’t a game,” he said. “It’s a demonstration.” The Pressure A mechanical sound echoed. Not gas this time. Movement. Walls shifting. Space tightening. Selene’s eyes scanned instantly. “They’re closing in.” Damian followed the motion. “Compression trap.” Victor’s voice continued: “Let’s see how well you function… when space runs out.” Closer Than Before The walls moved slowly— But steadily. Reducing distance. Forcing proximity. Selene stepped back. Damian did the same. Until— There was nowhere left to step. They were close now. Close enough to feel each other’s breath. Close enough to notice details they hadn’t before. Neither moved. Not away. Not forward. The Line Blurs “You always walk into traps?” Damian asked quietly. Selene met his gaze. “Only when the outcome is worth it.” “And this is?” A beat. Then— “Yes.” Another shift. Walls closer. Space tighter. “Solution?” he asked. Selene’s eyes flicked briefly around. “Above.” Damian followed her gaze. A narrow gap. Barely visible. “Too small,” he said. “For one,” she replied. Silence. Understanding. The Decision “You go,” Damian said. Selene didn’t move. “That’s not efficient.” “It’s necessary.” Selene’s gaze sharpened. “You don’t make sacrifices.” “I make decisions,” he corrected. The walls pressed closer. Time shrinking. Options narrowing. Selene stepped closer— Now inches apart. “This isn’t over if one of us stays,” she said. Damian’s voice dropped. “Then don’t waste time.” The Shift That Matters For a moment— Everything slowed. Not the trap. Not the danger. Just them. Selene looked at him. Really looked. Not as an ally. Not as a rival. As something else. Then— She moved. Using his support— She pushed upward— Grabbing the narrow opening— Pulling herself through. She paused— Just for a second— Looking down at him. “You better get out,” she said. Damian’s expression didn’t change. “Always do.” Cliff Edge The walls kept closing. Selene disappeared through the gap. Inside— Damian stood alone. Calculating. Waiting. And somewhere— Victor watched. “Now,” he said softly, “we see what he chooses.”
