THE DECISION YOU DON’T MAKE TWICE

. Chapter 12: The Decision You Don’t Make Twice The night air hit Selene the moment she pulled herself fully through the opening. Cold. Sharp. Free. She landed lightly on the upper level outside the compression chamber, immediately turning to assess her surroundings. No guards. No movement. Too clean. Below her— The trap continued. Metal grinding. Walls closing. Damian was still inside. The Exit That Wasn’t Enough Selene stepped back from the opening. Just once. Just enough to create distance. She could leave. Disappear. Reposition. Regain control. That was the logical move. The efficient move. The move she had always made. And yet— She didn’t move. The Conflict She Doesn’t Admit Her comms crackled. “Nyx, we lost your signal—what’s your status?” Selene didn’t answer immediately. Her eyes stayed on the opening. Inside— Time was running out. “Nyx?” the voice pressed again. Selene finally spoke. “Hold position.” “You need extraction—” “Hold. Position.” The line went silent. Inside the Trap Damian didn’t rush. Didn’t panic. Didn’t waste movement. The walls were closer now. Half the original space gone. Air tighter. Time shorter. He looked up once— At the opening she had gone through. She wasn’t there. A small, expected outcome. “Predictable,” he muttered. But he didn’t sound disappointed. The Calculation He stepped back—measuring the distance between the walls. Tracking speed. Pressure points. Timing. There was still a way out. There was always a way out. Just not the obvious one. The Return Above— Selene made her decision. Not logical. Not efficient. She moved. Fast. Precise. Dropping back through the opening— Landing behind him. Damian turned instantly— Eyes sharp— Then paused. “You came back,” he said. Selene didn’t respond to that. Instead— “Step left,” she said. No hesitation. He moved. Working Together—Without Saying It Selene scanned the walls quickly. “There’s a delay in the compression cycle,” she said. “Microseconds—but consistent.” Damian followed her line of sight. “Not enough.” “It is,” she replied. “If we force a misalignment.” He understood instantly. Two different minds. Same conclusion. The Escape Plan “On my mark,” Selene said. Damian positioned himself. The walls closed again— Closer— Almost no space left. “Now.” They moved at the same time. Selene struck the weak point— Damian redirected the pressure— The system stuttered— Just for a fraction of a second— Enough. The wall jammed. A narrow gap formed— Barely enough— Selene moved first— Not out— But through— Creating space— Damian followed— Pushing past the resistance— The mechanism snapped— The system failed— And the trap stopped. Breathing Room Silence. Then— Stillness. They stood in the broken space— Close again— Too close. This time— Neither stepped away immediately. The Truth They Don’t Say “You didn’t have to come back,” Damian said. Selene met his gaze. “Yes, I did.” A beat. That wasn’t strategy. That was something else. The Shift Above them— A slow clap echoed. Victor Hale’s voice followed. “Interesting.” Selene didn’t look up. “What now?” she asked. Victor’s tone remained calm. “Now… we accelerate.” The Reveal Begins A screen lit up on the wall. A face appeared. Blurry at first. Distorted. Then— Clear. Selene’s eyes narrowed. Damian’s expression darkened. Because they both recognized the person. And neither of them expected it. Cliffhanger Victor’s voice dropped slightly. “Meet Ghost.” The screen flickered— Freezing on the face— And everything changed.
