THE ENEMY WITHIN

Chapter 6: The Enemy Within Trust didn’t break loudly. It cracked quietly. And sometimes, by the time you heard it— It was already too late. The Uneasy Silence Selene stood in the center of her operations room, staring at the data stream in front of her. Numbers didn’t lie. People did. “Run it again,” she said. Her tech specialist hesitated. “I’ve already cross-checked three times—” “Run it again.” The room fell silent as the system recalculated. Patterns reformed. Signals aligned. And the result didn’t change. Selene’s network had been accessed internally. Not breached. Not forced. Opened. From within. “Who has clearance at that level?” she asked. A pause. Then— “Only senior personnel,” her second-in-command replied. Selene turned slowly. Her eyes moved across the room. Every face. Every expression. Every subtle shift in posture. No one spoke. No one moved. But one of them had already betrayed her. Across the city, Damian was reaching the same conclusion. “Say it clearly,” he said. His analyst swallowed. “The reroute command… it came from inside our system.” Damian didn’t react immediately. “Meaning?” “Someone on our side authorized it.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. Because betrayal wasn’t just a weakness. It was a message. The First Crack Reveals Itself Selene moved without warning. One moment she was still— The next, she had crossed the room and grabbed Kola by the collar, slamming him against the glass wall. The impact echoed. Gasps followed. But no one stepped forward. No one interfered. Because they all knew— If Selene was wrong, she would release him. If she wasn’t— Kola wouldn’t walk away. “You’ve been quieter than usual,” she said softly. Kola struggled slightly. “Selene, I would never—” “Don’t say what you wouldn’t do,” she cut in. “Show me what you didn’t do.” Her grip tightened. His pulse raced. And for a moment— She almost believed him. Almost. Then her comms device buzzed. She didn’t look away from him as she answered. “What?” “Nyx,” her tech said urgently, “we just intercepted a live transmission tied to Victor Hale.” Selene froze. “Location?” “Active. Moving. But—” “But what?” “It’s connected to Moretti’s network too.” Selene released Kola instantly. Not because she trusted him. But because something bigger had just surfaced. The Forced Collision The location was a transit hub on the edge of the city—half-operational, half-forgotten. Perfect for something that wasn’t meant to be seen. Selene arrived first again. But this time— She didn’t wait long. Damian stepped out of the shadows minutes later, his presence just as controlled, just as dangerous. “Your system too?” Selene asked without greeting. “Yes.” A beat. “Internal?” he asked. Selene’s silence was answer enough. “Same,” he said. They stood there for a moment. Not arguing. Not accusing. Because the situation had evolved beyond that. The Mission Begins “This is live,” Selene said. “Victor’s not just watching anymore—he’s moving.” “And we’re being guided,” Damian added. Selene glanced at him. “Or manipulated.” “Same difference,” he replied. A faint sound echoed from inside the structure. Metal shifting. Voices—low, distant. Both of them reacted instantly. Weapons drawn. Eyes sharp. Movement precise. And without another word— They moved in together. Inside the Trap The interior was darker than expected. Too clean. Too quiet. Selene moved left. Damian moved right. Covering angles without discussing it. Instinct. Training. Compatibility they didn’t want to acknowledge. Ahead, a figure ran across the corridor. Fast. “Stop!” Damian’s voice cut through the space. The figure didn’t stop. Selene moved. Faster. Intercepting. A clean takedown—precise, controlled, final. The man hit the ground hard. Breathing. Alive. Terrified. The Truth Surfaces “Who sent you?” Selene asked. The man shook his head rapidly. “I don’t know names—I just follow instructions!” Damian crouched slightly, his gaze colder. “What instructions?” “To transmit data—to reroute signals—I swear I don’t know anything else!” Selene’s eyes narrowed. “Who gave you access?” The man hesitated. That was enough. Damian’s voice dropped. “Answer.” “I—I got it from someone inside!” he blurted. “Both sides—your systems—someone opened the door!” Silence. Then— “Who?” Selene demanded. The man swallowed hard. “I don’t know his real name—just a codename…” Selene and Damian exchanged a brief glance. “Say it,” Damian ordered. The man whispered— “Ghost.” The Shift in Power Selene stood slowly. Damian did the same. Neither spoke for a moment. Because now— It wasn’t just betrayal. It was coordinated betrayal. “One person inside both our networks?” Selene said quietly. “Or two working as one,” Damian replied. Either way— It meant something worse than infiltration. It meant precision. Planning. Patience. The Real Danger Behind them, a faint mechanical click echoed. Both of them turned instantly— Too late. The doors slammed shut. Locks engaged. Lights flickered. And then— Victor Hale’s voice filled the room. Calm. Smooth. Controlled. “Now this,” he said, “is what I was waiting for.” Selene’s grip tightened on her weapon. Damian’s expression darkened. “You’ve both been very predictable,” Victor continued. “Suspicion, confrontation, realization… it’s almost disappointing how consistent human behavior is.” “Show yourself,” Damian said coldly. A soft chuckle echoed. “Not yet.” The lights dimmed further. “First,” Victor added, “let’s see how well you work together… when it actually matters.” Locked In Selene and Damian stood side by side. Not by choice. By circumstance. The alliance was no longer optional. It was necessary. Because now— They weren’t hunting Victor Hale anymore. They were inside his game. And somewhere beyond the walls… “Ghost” was still inside their worlds. Watching. Waiting. Ready to strike again.
