Chapter 2 Her Return

1379 Words
Calista turned and walked back into the room, tearing up the medical report she had originally planned to confess to Evander about, and throwing the pieces into the trash bin. Then, she took her luggage from the bedroom, walked over to Evander, and took out the divorce agreement she had prepared in advance. She looked at him and spoke slowly, each word heavy, “Evander, let’s get a divorce.” The moment the words left her mouth, Calista felt an unprecedented sense of relief. Evander looked at her coldly, seemingly trying to assess the truth behind her words. “You want a divorce? Just because I didn’t come home to spend our five-year anniversary with you?” “Yes, and no.” Calista lowered her head and smiled bitterly, a self-deprecating curve of her lips. Her life had only three months left, and she didn’t want to die with regrets. In the five years of their marriage, she had fulfilled her duties, always facing their relationship with passion and positivity. She had waited for him all night, stayed by his side when he was ill. She had given so much for this marriage. But eventually, the one who always takes the initiative gets tired. Now, she was exhausted and didn’t want to continue anymore. “Calista, are you being a little too capricious? How long are you going to play this cat-and-mouse game?” Evander furrowed his brows, looking down at her with a mocking expression. Calista didn’t want to say much. She simply pushed the pen and the divorce agreement towards him. “Sign it.” Evander suddenly clenched his fists, his gaze growing more intense. Could she really be serious about getting a divorce? She had begged her grandfather to marry him back then, and now she was so resolutely asking for a divorce? What was she playing at? “Since you want a divorce, I’ll grant it.” Evander’s voice was deep and devoid of any warmth. Without a moment’s hesitation, he took the pen and signed the divorce agreement. His eyes were cold. “However, I won’t let you leave empty-handed.” He took out a card from his pocket and handed it to her. “There’s five hundred million dollars in this card, and a villa at Verdant Lake Cloud Villas. It should be enough for your remaining expenses.” Calista stared at the black card that seemed to be a charity offering, instantly reminded of this marriage that felt like a charity. A wave of nausea rose in her stomach. She didn’t take the card. After signing the divorce agreement, she didn’t take anything with her. She had entered the Kingsworth family alone, and now, she was leaving it cleanly, without a single thing. Before leaving, Calista suddenly felt a sense of helplessness. She lifted her eyes, and realized that letting go of everything wasn’t difficult. “Evander, I just want to ask you one last thing.” Evander, irritated by her gaze, responded impatiently, “What?” “If I die, will there be a moment when you think of my good qualities?” Calista asked, her voice calm, devoid of any emotion, as though she were stating a fact. Her words caused Evander to freeze for a moment, it was so sudden and hard to comprehend. It was only then that he noticed the bandage on her forehead. She had made several calls yesterday, which was out of character for her. Evander’s cold eyes narrowed sharply. Could she have been seriously injured? But soon, a look of disdain flashed in his eyes. He thought to himself, Calista had always used these tactics to gain sympathy! It was how she had deceived Cyrus back then, using his sympathy to force him into marrying her. She was manipulative, deceitful! Evander’s voice turned sharp. “Calista, your words now are meaningless. We’re already divorced, your life or death has nothing to do with me!” Calista’s lashes trembled lightly as she lowered her head, concealing the relief in her eyes. “Fine. I’ll always remember your words.” However, just as she was about to open the door, Evander’s phone suddenly rang. Seeing the caller ID, Evander immediately answered the call. In the quiet room, Calista could hear Liora’s delicate voice coming through the phone. Her gaze turned icy. Evander had been home for less than an hour, and Liora was already eager to assert her dominance? “Evander, I’m having terrible morning sickness. I’ve been coughing and vomiting all night, and I feel so unwell...” Liora’s voice was soft and pleading, “Can you come over and keep me company?” Morning sickness? Calista felt as though she had been struck by lightning, stunned. Liora was pregnant... with Evander’s child? No wonder she had suddenly returned to the country. Evander’s expression shifted slightly as he walked over to the coat rack and grabbed his jacket. “Why are you suddenly feeling unwell? Did you eat something bad last night?” Immediately, Liora’s weak yet sweet voice came through the phone. “If you come and keep me company, I’ll feel better right away.” As Evander walked toward the door, he gently reassured her, “Alright, I’ll come over right now. Take some medicine in the meantime.” “Oh, by the way,” Liora pretended to sound understanding, “You’re coming to be with me all of a sudden—Calista won’t be angry, will she?” “She won’t. We’ve already divorced.” Evander took a deep breath and instinctively glanced at Calista. She had her head lowered, standing in the corner with her suitcase, as though she hadn’t heard a word he said. Liora continued pretending to be shocked. “What? You and Calista are divorced? Is it because I came back pregnant...” She paused and began sobbing. “It’s my fault. Evander, if I had known, I wouldn’t have come back. I should have stayed abroad and raised the child alone. I never came back to break up your relationship with Calista... Even with this child, you don’t need to be responsible for me...” Calista could no longer stand Liora’s hypocrisy. She grabbed her suitcase and walked toward the door. Just as the elevator arrived, she suddenly had an idea, turned back, and said with a tight-lipped farewell, “Mr. Kingsworth, I hope this is the last time we meet.” Evander’s expression immediately turned cold. His deep eyes narrowed slightly as he coldly stared at her. She called him “Mr. Kingsworth”? A dark shadow flickered in his eyes, as if something deep inside him was slowly withdrawing, leaving him with an inexplicable emptiness. ***** After leaving the villa, Calista wandered aimlessly on the street. Her heart was filled with an indescribable sense of desolation and loneliness. At that moment, the sound of helicopter blades reached her ears. Calista looked up to see a dozen helicopters slowly descending from the sky. As the doors opened, dozens of bodyguards dressed in black suits quickly jogged toward her and simultaneously bowed in salute. Calista was led onto a helicopter by a middle-aged man at the front. Once she was seated, the man excitedly knelt on one knee. “Miss Lockwood, we’ve finally found you! Old Master Lockwood is in trouble...” Calista looked at the man before her in confusion. Anyone familiar with the upper echelons of Arcanum society would be shocked speechless. For this man was none other than the butler of the Lockwood family—Elian Montgomery! The Lockwood family held significant influence in Arcanum. While their wealth was not as substantial as the Kingsworth family’s, their influence was enough to make the whole of Arcanum tremble. In fact, even before Calista was officially recognized by the Lockwood family, Ronan Lockwood had already secretly found her. At that time, Ronan had carefully avoided everyone’s notice and quietly trained her for five years. Ronan had been the only light in her life. However, five years ago, when Ronan asked her whether she wanted to stay with the Lockwood family to inherit their legacy or marry Evander, Calista had chosen without hesitation to marry Evander. Years later, she had almost completely forgotten her true identity.
