Nurse Dorian was inside, trying cardiopulmonary resuscitation. “Step back!” I shouted as I entered. I stepped in, my heart refusing to accept what was happening before my eyes. I reached for her wrist and checked her pulse. No response. My right hand flared to her chest immediately, while my left rested right over it. I started the compressions. “One, two, three… twenty… twenty-one, twenty-two… twenty-seven… thirty…” I gave her the first breath. Nothing. We added oxygen… but the results were the same. No response.
