BACK IN SYDNEY, BONITA and little Megan had an unexpected visitor. There were no phone calls or emails to ask if he could visit. He just turned up. She saw him from the window and refused to open the door. ‘What do you want?’ she said with a tinge of annoyance. ‘At least let me in,’ said John. ‘Come on, let’s talk.’ Little Megan stood on the sofa positioned against the wall to see better. A man was ringing the doorbell and Mummy wouldn’t let him in. She peered at the man with concern, not so much because he was scary-looking but because Mummy was upset. Bonita sensed Megan’s unease so she took a deep breath and battened down emotionally. ‘Okay,’ she said, ‘but I’d appreciate you calling first next time.’ ‘Fine. Promise.’ She rolled her eyes at ‘promise.’ The man didn’t understand
