IT WAS ALREADY DARK, although not late, by the time they got home. The daylight period was still short. She collected her mail on the way in, tossing them onto her desk to join all the other correspondence and bills that had been ignored. She played with Megan for a bit, then gave her washing machine a workout. Soon, it was bath and then sleep-time for the little one. Megan kissed Papa Duck’s photo and cuddled with Ducky Bear. It was all routine. Bonita wondered briefly, as she stood by the door gazing at her child, what would happen if Duck refused to come home.
