Evelyn awoke in a hospital—far more luxurious than any she had ever visited before. A sharp throb pulsed through her head. Just as she tried to rise from the bed, a stabbing pain shot through her lower abdomen.
“Ah!” she cried out, her voice catching the attention of a nurse who had been preparing supplies nearby.
The nurse spun around. “Miss!” she exclaimed, rushing to Evelyn’s side as she struggled against the pain. “What’s happening?” she asked anxiously, quickly examining her. Moments later, she handed Evelyn a dose of paracetamol. Gradually, the pain began to ease.
Evelyn lay weakly against the mattress. What the hell… what’s going on? Her mind reeled. She remembered being outside the college grounds, struck by a massive truck.
“Nurse, I’m here because I was hit by a truck, right?” Evelyn asked, her eyes narrowing at the woman. But the nurse hesitated, then offered a sympathetic smile.
“No, miss. You were brought here in critical condition. There was severe internal bleeding from a heavy impact.”
Evelyn frowned. “But… wasn’t it from the truck?”
The nurse shook her head. “We discovered that you… suffered a miscarriage.”
“What?! A miscarriage?!” Evelyn’s eyes widened, her mouth falling open. Her mind went blank. Pregnant? When was I ever pregnant?!
The nurse, whose nametag read Lydia, looked at her with pity. “We couldn’t save the child. We only managed to preserve your uterus. For now, you’re under special care. If you feel pain in your womb again, please inform us immediately.”
Evelyn stared at her in disbelief. “Are you serious, nurse? Don’t joke with me! When was I ever pregnant? I’m still a student!” she snapped. Lydia’s face grew tense. “Miss, I understand you’re in shock, but what I’m telling you is the truth.”
“No way!” Evelyn barked. “Where’s my medical report? I want to see it—now!”
With a heavy sigh, Lydia retrieved a file and handed it to her. Evelyn flipped through it quickly, her eyes widening in disbelief. Everything the nurse had said was true. She laughed bitterly, shaking her head. “Since when…?”
But then her gaze froze on a name printed inside the file.
Maya Erina.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Evelyn hurled the file away. Lydia gasped. “Miss! What are you doing?” she cried, snatching the file back. Evelyn’s lips curled in fury. “That’s not my name! Maya Erina isn’t me! How dare you lie to me?!”
Lydia frowned deeply. “Miss… why are you saying that? Your name is Maya Erina. Have you forgotten who you are?”
Evelyn’s anger boiled. Since when was I Maya? Am I Evelyn… or Maya?
Her hands clawed at her hair as her head throbbed violently. Lydia grew alarmed as Evelyn’s emotions spiraled out of control. “Miss, please calm down—Miss Maya!” she pleaded, reaching out to soothe her. Evelyn shoved her away. “Get out of my way!”
She ripped the IV from her arm and bolted out of the ward. Lydia’s eyes widened. “Miss Maya, stop!”
Evelyn sprinted down the corridor, past rows of hospital rooms. The pounding of footsteps echoed behind her. “Miss Maya! Stop!” security guards shouted as they chased her. Onlookers stared in confusion at the commotion.
Finally, Evelyn burst into a restroom, gasping for breath. The civilians inside recoiled in shock, but she ignored them, rushing straight to the mirror.
Her eyes widened in horror.
“Ah!” she screamed, startling everyone around her. Her trembling hands touched her face. Who is this?!
Golden-brown curls framed her reflection. Hazel's eyes stared back. This… this wasn’t her.
What is happening to me?!
Her head throbbed harder, her body weakening under the weight of panic. She collapsed onto the tiled floor. Chaos erupted as people rushed to her aid. Lydia stormed in, her eyes widening at the sight.
“Miss Maya!”
