Chapter 5: Physical Examination

Adit had booked the room in advance. A hotel attendant escorted them to the door, handed them their key cards, and, after confirming they didn’t need any further assistance, bowed and left. Adit had booked a large suite with a living room, kitchen, balcony, and several bedrooms. He gave the room with the private bathroom to Ge Sihan. Adit hadn’t brought a maid along on this trip to take care of Ge Sihan because he was very independent and capable of handling his own affairs; he wasn’t the type who couldn’t manage without servants. Besides, he didn’t want to make too much of a scene and draw attention. Usa was naturally worried about her sister, but living under someone else’s roof meant she had to behave. So she couldn’t say a word and let Adit take her sister away. Adit led her into his room, asking her one by one if she knew what each item was and making sure she understood how to use them before leaving. Before he went, he showed her which room he was staying in and said slowly, “If you have any problems, knock on the door and look for me.” Ge Sihan didn’t understand the words, but she grasped Adit’s meaning. She pressed her lips together and nodded. Adit gently closed the door. Ge Sihan walked around the spacious, luxurious room, then sat down on the sofa and let out a long sigh. For now, she’d just have to take things one step at a time. She had slept almost the entire day on the train. She wasn’t particularly tired, but she still felt a bit dizzy. After resting on the sofa for a while, she opened the suitcase sitting on the floor, took out her clothes and toiletries, freshened up in the en-suite bathroom, and climbed into bed in her pajamas. Once in bed, Ge Sihan realized she had nothing to do but sleep, so she closed her eyes and gradually drifted off. The next day, Adit woke her up. After getting dressed and freshening up, they had breakfast and headed to the hospital. They drove straight into the hospital grounds and, at the entrance of a building, met the person waiting for them—a male doctor. He led them all the way to his office. The male doctor appeared to know Adit well; they exchanged only a few brief words. In the office, Adit and the doctor explained the situation and handed him a folder containing the medical records and preliminary diagnosis compiled by the family doctor. Dr. Sing glanced at the records written by the family doctor, then looked at the quiet little girl beside him, and said to Adit, “ “The brain is a delicate organ, and any situation can lead to different outcomes. Khun Adit, I must be honest with you—I have never treated a condition like Khun Saengkea’s before… I need to perform a brain X-ray and other comprehensive tests on Khun Saengkea to check for any brain damage. Only after confirming there are no issues can we proceed with further assessments.” Adit nodded. “No problem, Doctor. I understand.” Dr. Sing said, “Thank you, Khun Adit. Please rest assured that during the examination, I will have a female doctor and a female nurse accompany Khun Saengkea the entire time to monitor her condition.” Adit replied, “Thank you. That’s very thoughtful of you.” After obtaining consent from Adit, her guardian, Dr. Sing picked up the phone on the desk and began contacting people outside. While they were talking, Ge Si-han sat in her seat, watching quietly. She couldn’t understand a word of what they were saying, but she knew these words were closely tied to her own fate. Yet all she could do was… watch. Watch in silence. After a moment, two women entered the office—one in a nurse’s uniform, the other in a doctor’s white coat. They exchanged greetings and introductions with Dr. Sing and Adit. Dr. Sing spoke a few words to them, and the female doctor crouched down in front of Ge Si-han, smiling as she bowed to her: “Hello, Khun Saengkea.” Ge Si-han pressed her palms together in a prayer gesture and looked at Adit. Adit said to her, “Dr. Nongram.” Ge Si-han nodded and gave a slight bow to the female doctor in front of her, saying, “Hello, Dr. Nongram.” Dr. Nongram lowered her hands and stood up, smiling as she extended her hand to Ge Si-han and said, enunciating each word clearly, “Please follow me, Khun Saengkea.” Ge Si-han didn’t understand the words, but she could grasp the meaning. She glanced at Adit; seeing him nod in agreement, she took Dr. Nongram’s hand and walked out with her and the nurse. Watching them leave, Dr. Sing remarked, “Khun Saengkea is very calm and rational. I’m starting to feel optimistic about the test results.” Ge Si-han was taken by Dr. Nongram and the nurse to undergo an X-ray examination. The machine was just as old-fashioned as the others, but Ge Si-han wasn’t picky—as long as it worked, that was fine. It took her a little while to complete the X-ray under the guidance of the doctor and nurse, after which they led her to a different room for a full-body examination. She was also taken back to the doctor’s office, where, under Sing’s supervision, she underwent tests to assess her cognitive abilities. By the time she finished, an hour or two had passed. Although she was well cared for—able to drink water and rest at any time, and spared from having to wait in line—Ge Si-han was still completely exhausted. When she woke up today, her fever had subsided, but her limbs still felt weak. After the examinations, all she wanted to do was lie down; she didn’t feel like saying a word. Ge Si-han was dazed and pale. Dr. Sing had the nurse take her to the adjacent lounge to rest and asked Adit to stay behind to hear the final results. Adit confirmed with the doctor, “So, you’re saying there’s no brain damage in Saengkea, and aside from the weakness caused by her illness, her body is fine? The preliminary assessment is that she’s perfectly normal?” Dr. Sing explained in terms anyone could understand: “Yes, although X-rays have their limitations—for example, their low density resolution means they can’t distinguish specific lesions—the good news is that we didn’t see any abnormalities on the X-rays. Our examination shows that Khun Saengkea subconsciously avoids touching harmful objects like flames or broken glass, and she picks up on many things very quickly, even if she hasn’t encountered them before… This also suggests that the common-sense knowledge from her previous life is still stored in her subconscious. As for her personality, as you’re well aware, Khun Saengkea has a stable temperament and possesses a certain degree of judgment. Even though she doesn’t understand a word we say, we can still communicate with her to some extent—all of which indicates that there are no issues with her intelligence… It’s highly likely that she simply lost her memory due to a high fever, forgetting everything, including language. “If you wish to administer an IQ test, I believe that will have to wait until Khun Saengkea has acquired a certain level of language skills and general knowledge.” Adit leafed through the report and nodded. This was good news for both him and Saengkea herself. Especially for Saengkea. He smiled faintly. “Thank you for your hard work, Dr. Sing. “In that case, I’d like to arrange a private tutor to teach Saengkea what she needs to know so she can recover as soon as possible. Do you have any suggestions?” Sing knew full well that Adit wasn’t asking for his approval or disapproval, but rather for his input on how to address the gaps. He thought for a moment and replied, “First and foremost, we should hire a female teacher, because I’ve noticed that Khun Saengkea is somewhat reluctant to approach men and tends to warm up to women more quickly. If a suitable female tutor cannot be found, a woman must be present whenever a male tutor is teaching her, so she can feel more at ease.” His words were subtle, but everyone understood. Seeing Adit nod, he continued, “If possible, please don’t schedule the lessons too tightly. After all, Khun Saengkea isn’t in the best of health; she’s very young and has just recovered from such a high fever, so she still needs plenty of rest.” Adit smiled faintly. “I understand. Thank you, Dr. Sing.” Dr. Sing replied, “You’re welcome, Khun Adit. I’ll prepare a detailed medical report to explain Khun Saengkea’s condition to the other doctors and ask them to prescribe some tonics for her. I hope she recovers her health as soon as possible.” Adit smiled, nodded, and bowed, but in his mind, he was already thinking about hiring a private tutor for Ge Si-han. His vacation was coming to an end, and before returning to France to continue his studies, he had to get this matter settled. After all, at Golden Summit, aside from him, there was no one capable of handling this task, and those who cared about it were unable to do so.
