Chapter 8: Reconnaissance Despite her general fatigue and the tensions of the day, Jade did not sleep well that first night on Haldek. Her brain had gone into what she called “field mode,” and any slight noise was enough to rouse her—at least enough to determine whether it might be the sound of something hostile approaching. On top of that, Fastal made little puling noises as he slept, and was constantly—and noisily—shifting position. Jade didn’t know whether that was standard for him, or whether seeing his family’s home in this condition was disturbing his sleep.
