Secrets in the Shadows
As Elsa stepped out of the police station, the air outside hit her like a wave, but it did little to clear her mind. Her father’s death had been ruled an accident, but everything she had heard inside screamed of lies. The officer’s words repeated in her mind like a broken record: drugs in his system… smoking while driving. None of it made sense.
She shook her head, trying to push back the frustration and confusion. She needed to focus. Her father wasn’t reckless, and he didn’t smoke. Someone was behind this, and she was determined to find out who.
Her thoughts were interrupted when a man walking briskly collided with her shoulder.
“Excuse me!” Elsa called out, but the man didn’t even glance back. His hurried footsteps disappeared into the crowd, leaving Elsa with an uneasy feeling.
She reached for her bag instinctively, making sure it was still there. As she adjusted it, her fingers brushed against something unfamiliar. Frowning, she opened the bag and pulled out a thin stack of papers she hadn’t seen before. Her breath caught as she realized what it was—a document detailing her father’s phone call history.
Her heart raced as she scanned the pages. Most of the calls were familiar, business contacts, family… until her eyes landed on the final entry. The last person her father had spoken to before his death was Liam.
The document slipped from her hands, fluttering to the ground as shock paralyzed her. Liam? Why would her husband have been the last person to speak to her father? He had told her repeatedly that he hadn’t spoken to her father after the wedding day.
Elsa’s knees felt weak as she crouched to retrieve the papers. Her hands trembled as she clutched them tightly, her mind racing. This wasn’t just a coincidence—it couldn’t be. Liam had lied to her, and now she had proof.
The ride home was a blur. She barely noticed the car that tailed her all the way, the same two bodyguards Liam had assigned to her. Her thoughts were consumed by the document in her bag.
Back home, she struggled to keep her emotions in check. At breakfast the next morning, she forced herself to sit across from Liam, her heart pounding in her chest. She had to tread carefully; if Liam had something to hide, confronting him outright would only tip him off.
“Liam,” she said casually, slicing into her toast, “did you ever speak to my father after the wedding? I mean, I know you were busy, but I just wondered if he had reached out to you.”
Liam looked up from his coffee, his expression calm. “No,” he said with a faint smile. “The last time we spoke was the day before the wedding. Why do you ask?”
Elsa forced herself to smile back, though her heart sank at his words. He was lying—again.
“Oh, no reason,” she replied, keeping her tone light. “Just reminiscing about him.”
Liam nodded, his attention returning to his breakfast. Elsa excused herself, her appetite gone. She made her way to the study, locking the door behind her.
Sitting at the desk, she spread out the documents and began to piece everything together. Liam had lied about speaking to her father, and the timing of their call was suspicious. It was the last call her father had made before his death. Could Liam have known something? Or worse, could he have been involved?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the faint sound of Liam’s voice outside. Curious, she cracked the door open, straining to hear his conversation.
“…No, she doesn’t know anything,” Liam was saying. “I’ve handled it. Just stick to the plan, and everything will go smoothly.”
Elsa’s blood ran cold. What plan? Who was he talking to?
She closed the door quietly, her mind spinning. It was clear now that Liam wasn’t the man she thought he was. He was hiding something—something big.
Elsa knew she couldn’t confront him yet. She needed more evidence, more answers. She couldn’t trust anyone, not even the police. Whoever had slipped her that document had given her a lifeline, and she intended to use it.
For now, she would pretend everything was normal, but deep down, Elsa was preparing for the storm ahead. Liam wasn’t just her husband anymore—he was her enemy, and she would stop at nothing to uncover the truth.
