CHAPTER 12 AUGUST, 1892 Spring was threatening to arrive behind a flurry of westerly wind. The riotous birdcall and fresh buds on branches filled Lillian with optimism. Catherine had happily included her on every outing over the last few months wherever their time off coincided. The Glaswegian introduced Lillian to so many new experiences such as croquet in the Botanic Gardens and lunch at various tearooms with Melanie and Rosemary, she felt as though she had been reborn. With Matthew and Arthur in tow, they attended the annual Exhibition; a carnival of noise and colour where the scent of cattle and straw combined with the sickly-sweet taste of jam tarts.
