CHAPTER 17 SOUTH BRISBANE Lillian hugged a shawl around her shoulders and sipped a strong cup of tea at the dining room table. The Hamilton’s housemaid and nanny, Lucy, brought a poached egg and two slices of toast and set them down. After being a servant for so long it was a strange feeling to be served and Lillian had no appetite for the food before her. She said, ‘Thank you,’ anyhow before the slight girl of about fifteen returned to the kitchen. By rights, Lillian herself was still only an apprentice and didn’t truly deserve to be sitting there alongside the rest of the family.
