‘Goodness, what happened to you?’ Mrs Menzies looked aghast at Lillian when she entered the kitchen, still wrapped in Godfrey’s coat. ‘Some disgusting men grabbed at me on my way back.’ ‘It’s far too late to be wandering the streets on your own.’ Mrs Menzies peered out the window as if to confirm it. ‘You look a fright and you are unacceptably late. Go and change right this instant. You’re dripping all over my clean floor. Wash your face and pin your hair up properly. Mrs Shaw will have a fit if you serve her dessert looking like that. She’s been asking where you are. Good grief, what is the world coming to?’ Lillian was dismayed but not surprised that she received absolutely no sympathy from the cook.
