CHAPTER 10 MONTAGUE ROAD Lillian was too afraid to ask Patricia about Georgina, and Patricia wouldn’t say anything more. Other strangers’ babies arrived and several Sundays rolled by uneventfully, even though a heavy pall hung between the sisters. It was with even greater dismay then the afternoon Lillian turned up to find Alfred sitting on the front porch. His feet rested on the railing, one on top of the other, as he reclined on a chair pulled from the kitchen puffing away on his pipe. Despite poor Georgina’s disappearance, her sister Penelope had thrived. Patricia had stopped using laudanum so often to soothe the infants to sleep.
