Chapter 1

AGATHA The wind blows strongly as the sky gradually darkens. I stand tearfully, staring at the two newly covered graves. They are my parents. They died together on my seventeenth birthday. The events happened so quickly. We were all happy as Dad was singing their favorite song when suddenly, he fell to the ground and white liquid flowed from his mouth. We were all frantic, especially when Mom suddenly collapsed on the floor. I was frozen in place, unsure of which one of them I should take to the hospital and save after the tragedy that happened in my life. Dad was pronounced dead on arrival. He was poisoned, and it quickly spread throughout his body, while Mom was declared dead after an hour when she couldn’t be revived after a heart attack. In an instant, I became an orphan. Suddenly, I was alone in this world. I was dazed and didn’t know how to begin as I stared at my parents’ lifeless bodies. During those hours, my mind was chaotic, and I also wanted to die. Tears streamed down my face as I couldn’t even open my mouth to speak, as it would only result in loud sobbing whenever I tried. I was no longer in my right mind, especially since I didn’t know where to get a large sum of money to pay for all the expenses for my parents’ wake and burial. I am grateful to our neighbors because I was able to bring my parents out of the hospital. The wake and burial were a huge responsibility for me. I didn’t have any savings. I was still a student relying on my parents to support me. Luckily, my half-sister arrived, Crista, my father’s daughter from his first marriage. She was like an angel descending from heaven when she appeared at our doorstep, where my parents’ wake was being held. She’s sophisticated, beautiful, and clearly wealthy. Even in her black attire, her affluence couldn’t be hidden. Crista is the one helping us here in our town. She lives in San Francisco, California and works there. I immediately called her and informed her about what happened to our parents. I am very grateful that she came and didn’t leave me to shoulder all the responsibilities that I knew I couldn’t handle on my own for my parents. “Let’s go, Agatha. It’s getting dark. It’s not safe for us to stay here, especially since we’re both women,” Crista said softly. I nodded silently because I couldn’t speak or even open my mouth. It felt like there was a lump in my throat that would make me cry again with the slightest movement. I didn’t want to leave my parents’ graves, but I needed to accompany Crista back to our house. We were the only ones left here in the cemetery because the people who expressed their condolences and attended the burial had already left. “Get in,” Crista ordered. Her car was beautiful, obviously expensive and for the wealthy. I didn’t know what Crista’s job was, and I didn’t bother to ask anymore because my mind was too chaotic at the moment. We went home. I thought we would rest first, but Crista said she needed to go back to San Francisco and I had to come with her. “Crista, can I not come with you for now and stay here at home until the forty days are over for Dad’s daily prayer?” I asked sadly. “No, Agatha. You’re a woman and you’re already of age. I can’t leave you here alone. We are the only ones left in this world. I don’t want to leave you alone, lest Dad haunt me,” my sister replied formally. I couldn’t do anything but quickly pack a few pieces of my clothes in a bag. We didn’t even have a quick meal before we got in Crista’s car and she drove as if she were in a race. Due to Crista’s fast driving, we quickly arrived in San Francisco. The journey from our town in Ferndale only took a few hours as if she was racing against other vehicles. Fortunately, there were food vendors on the road, and I wasn’t hungry, especially since we didn’t eat before leaving the house. A large and towering building greeted me for the first time here in the city. It looked scary and dizzying, especially when Crista and I rode the elevator. It felt like an earthquake under my feet. I was nervous and really scared as the small room with mirrored walls moved upwards in the building while my sister and I were inside. My vision almost spun when suddenly the elevator stopped, and the doors opened. Trembling, I stepped out and followed Crista who walked quickly as if nothing happened, and it was normal to ride an elevator. My eyes widened as Crista and I entered a luxurious house. It was a picture of abundance, far from our life in town. I am grateful that my sister brought me to the room where I am staying now. Because of tiredness, I quickly fell asleep and only woke up at noon. As soon as I opened my eyes, I was surprised to hear continuous moans and screams coming from the other side of the room I was staying in. “Ohhhh! Keep going!” I heard loud moans. “Oh my god! That’s it, so good!” My eyes widened at what I heard. I am sure it was Crista’s voice coming from her room. I wonder what she was eating that she enjoys it so much. I stretched my arms and got up. I cautiously opened the door and peeped outside, but the moans of Crista only got louder. “Deeper, baby! Ohhh...” My heart pounded as I walked to follow the noise I was hearing to find where my sister was. Her house may not be big, but it is definitely for the wealthy, especially considering how high the location is. I followed the muffled moans and screams of Crista and it led me to a door. I was about to knock when I noticed that the door was slightly ajar, so I slowly pushed it open. I did not expect to see what I saw that shocked my innocent eyes. Crista was lying down and at the end of the bed. One leg was hanging off the side, while the other was draped over the shoulder of a naked man, who was facing away from me, while his body moved in a rhythmic motion, causing my sister’s moans and screams to become even louder.
