The Past

Raelynns POV After a few days, my heat had finally passed, and I was able to finally leave the confines of my room. I decided to go for a long walk and found myself back at the waterfall where Jace had found me the night of my party. I sit on the edge with my feet in the water and gaze into the falling water. Lost in thought. I have avoided Jace at all costs. I am too embarrassed to see him. I lay back in the grass and stared up at the bright blue sky and listened to the birds chirping away and the honey bees buzzing from flower to flower. I love it here. It is so peaceful, I fall asleep. Raelynn, wake up. I opened my eyes and sat up to look to see who was talking to me. I don't see anyone. Strange. Maybe it was part of the dream. Raelynn, it's me, your wolf. The name is Miska My wolf? I thought I would have gotten you on my birthday? Why now? Well, someone decided to go into heat and that clouded your mind, making it impossible to connect. This is the most rested you've been my dear. Does this mean you know who my mate is? No. Although I will know as soon as I- . As soon as you what? What is that wonderful smell? I took a deep breath and suddenly was struck by the smell of cedar wood and apples. It smelled like heaven, the absolute best smell to ever grace my senses. Suddenly, the smell was replaced with an overpowering swamp smell. I smelled the person before I saw them. I turned around and saw someone that made my skin crawl. My past is coming back to haunt me. Suddenly, I was the terrified thirteen-year-old little girl again as I took in the man with the greasy black hair, slicked back with the beady black eyes and the wolf dragon tattoo on his neck. I screamed. Raelynn, run! That is before everything went black. Jace's POV I am running through training with the warriors in the pack, trying to keep my mind busy and off the mind-blowing kiss with Raelynn the night of her party. I haven't slept a full night's worth of sleep since. She has been visiting in my dreams. Raj won't stop talking about her, so I've ignored him to the best of my ability. I'm sparring with Felix when I hear it. The scream that chills me to the bones. All the warriors hear it. Seconds later, the guards mindlink that there has been a breach among our boarders. We all took off running in the direction of the scream that had suddenly gone silent. I jump and shift into my wolf, allowing Raj to lead us to where the scream had come from. All of us are on high alert. We don't take security breaches lightly. Whoever has crossed into Blood Moon territory will pay. I know the scream, I know to the depths of my soul it was Raelynn. Now I must find her and make sure she is okay. We entered the clearing and saw nothing. But I can smell him. It was a horrible smell that never belonged to our pack. That's when I heard the voices. I shift back into my human form and grab a hidden pair of shorts. I signaled my men to stay alert but to hold back. I walked quietly to the entrance of the cave near the waterfall. "Please just let me go." I heard Raelynn plead. "But why would I do that? You were supposed to die years ago." I heard a raspy male voice say. "Why would you kidnap me years ago if you meant me to die? I don't remember anything from before I was dumped on the side of the road." she pleaded. This was the man who kidnapped her from her family? Anger vibrated through my body and I fought to keep Raj contained. This man was the reason she was left to die on the side of the road all those years ago if my father hadn't found her on his way home from a business trip. What brings this man to our land now and dares to trespass. "I can not have the royal bloodline living on!" he shouts at her. "I needed you to die so that my rise to the thrown would be a success, but no.... you had to live. Well I am to fix that... I will rise to the throne!" "Royal? What are you talking about? I'm not a royal." she stammers out. "You are a royal and unfortunately all royals have the family crest tattooed onto them at a very young age, you would never be able to hide from it. Someone would see your Dragon Moon tattoo. You must not live." Raelynn screams as he smacks her hard across the face. I run inside and tackle him before shifting into my wolf. I must protect her. I put my large body between her and him, he will have to put me down before I will allow him to touch her again. The man stands up and lunges at me. I slam my head into him and send him flying into the cave wall. He hits the wall with such force that small rocks start to fall from the ceiling. I hear him moving to stand up and growl deep in my throat. This is the only warning I give him to stay down. As soon as he starts to move I pounce on him and sink my fangs into his arm. I shake himlike a rag doll while mindlinking the warriors that hes to be taken to the dungeon. He will be delat with later. I drag him to the clearing and hand him over to the warriors. I hurry back inside to find Raelynn bent over sobbing into her hands. "Raelynn, shhh. Its okay. No one is going to hurt you. I got you." I wrap my arms around her and she buries her face into my chest and sobs silently into me. The only movement is the shaking of her body. You better not let her go this time. That asshole needs to be taken out for good. Raj, thats not helping. I know I will not let him get away with this. But what did he mean she was royalty? I never heard of a missing Royal. That's because someone covered it up. Remember, he said she was suppose to have died that night. I pull away just enough to look at her face. It is blotchy and tear streaked. Her eyes are the mirror of sadness. I wish I knew how to help her wade these waters. Not knowing what to do, I lift her in my arms and carry her out of the cave. We continue on through the woods, even the crickets are quiet tonight. Like they know tonight is a sad night. We eventually make it back to the pack house and I mindlink my parents to meet us in my dads office. My parents are waiting when we walk in and I carry Raelynn to the couch my dad has in his office. I lay her on it and cover her with a blanket. I turn to face my parents. "Dad, what do you remember about the night you found Raelynn?" "I was coming back from a business meeting, it was raining like a monsoon and as we came around the curve, not even 2 hours from home in the middle of nowhere I see this girl soaking wet covered in mud on the side of the road. Until I approached her I couldn't tell if she was alive." he says as he glances over at Raelynn who is continuing to stare off into space. "Well, apparently she was left there to die."
