  Alex reached the top floor and was stunned by what he saw. The corridor was dim, and the only sounds were the echo of his and Clarice's footsteps—eerie, to say the least.   Who would've thought someone actually lived up here in this corner of the Sullivan place?   He followed Clarice into a room. The light was on inside, but it was still dead quiet.   Clarice had already checked on her sister earlier. She'd been using a cold towel to bring her fever down. From Mrs. Houghton, she'd learned that something was wrong with Sophia that morning during breakfast delivery. She had reported it to Margaret, who brushed it off as a minor issue unworthy of bothering Mr. Sullivan.   "Sis!"
