The Trip Back HomePete’s feet hurt like crazy. “Help, somebody, help! Get us out of here!” he cried. Whoosh! A cool breeze rushed into the blackness that surrounded them. Pete saw a tiny, flickering light. As he watched, it sprouted wings. It was the dove he saw in the woods. As it flew toward him, he felt something shift. Instead of lying on his left side, he was sitting up. He felt a rush as the coaster car burst from the black pot into the light of a bright, sunny day. The ride came to a slow, smooth stop. A kind-looking man unlocked Sam and Patty’s lap bars and helped them out of the car. Pete was next. He looked up, expecting the man to unlock his lap bar. But the lights had grown dim, and a shadow seemed to fall over him. The man wasn’t there anymore, and Pete felt himself moving
