CHAPTER TWO

Adelaide's POV I woke up to the warmth of the morning sun peeking through my curtains, stretching my arms above my head. I felt a slight stiffness in my back from the previous night's restless sleep. My mind had wandered back to the mysterious stranger I'd left at the hospital, Zane. I began my morning routine, my thoughts drifted back to Zane. I wondered how he was doing, if he was recovering well from his injuries. I shook my head, trying to clear my mind. I had more important things to focus on, like my work and my family. After a meticulous morning routine, I got dressed and headed downstairs to the dining room. My parents were already seated, sipping their coffee and engaged in a quiet conversation. They exchanged warm smiles as I joined them. "Good morning, sweetie," my mother said, as I kissed her cheek. "Did you sleep well?" I nodded, taking my seat. "Yes, Mom. I did." My father, ever the concerned parent, asked, "How's your health, dear? You've been working too hard lately." I reassured him, "I'm fine, Dad. Just a bit tired from work." Avery, who had been quietly observing the exchange, cleared her throat to get their attention. "Good morning, everyone. Adelaide, I was worried about you when you came home so late last night." I smiled, "I'm sorry, Avery. I had to take someone to the hospital." Avery's eyes sparkled with concern. "Oh, who was it? Is everything okay?" I filled her in on the details, leaving out Zane's name. My parents fussed over me, relieved that I was safe. "We were worried sick about you," my mother said, her voice trembling. "You should have called us, let us know you were okay." I reassured her, "I'm sorry, Mom. I didn't mean to worry you. It was just an emergency, and I had to act fast." My father added, "We're just glad you're safe, sweetie. But next time, please call us. We want to make sure you're okay." Avery warned, "You have to be careful, sis. You can't risk your life like that." I appreciated her concern, but I knew Avery was just being dramatic. As they finished breakfast, my parents continued to chat with me, discussing everything from the company's latest deals to their upcoming family vacation. Avery joined in, sharing stories about her latest business ventures. I listened intently, nodding and smiling in all the right places. But my mind kept wandering back to Zane, wondering what he was doing, if he was thinking of me. As the morning drew to a close, I excused myself, citing a busy day ahead. My parents and Avery bid me farewell, each giving me a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek. I made my way to the car, where my assistant, Rachel, was waiting for me. "Good morning, Adelaide," Rachel said, smiling. "How was your visit with... um... the man from the hospital?" I smiled, taking the cup of coffee from Rachel. "It was good, thanks," I said. "He's recovering well." Rachel nodded, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "That's great to hear," she said. "I'm sure you'll be happy to see him again soon." I raised an eyebrow, wondering how Rachel had known I was planning to visit Zane again. As we drove to the hospital for a quick visit before work, my mind wandered back to Zane. I wondered what he would say when he saw me, if he would even remember me. When we arrived at the hospital, I instructed Rachel to wait for me while I visited Zane. I made my way to the nurse's station, where I inquired about Zane's condition. The nurse smiled warmly, "He's doing well, considering. He's a bit stubborn, but he's recovering nicely." I smiled, feeling a sense of relief. "That's great to hear," I said. "Can I see him?" The nurse nodded, "Of course. He's in room 304." I made my way to Zane's room, carrying a thermos of chicken soup I'd prepared for him. I knocked gently on the door, waiting for his response. "Come in," Zane's deep voice called out. I entered the room, my eyes locking onto Zane's. He was sitting up in bed, his laptop open in front of him. He looked up, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. "Hey," he said, his voice laced with a hint of seduction which he wasn't aware about. I felt a flutter in my chest as I smiled back at him. "Hey," I said, trying to sound casual. "How are you feeling?" Zane shrugged, "I'm okay. Just a bit bored." I laughed, "I brought you some chicken soup. I hope you like it." Zane's eyes lit up, "Thanks. That's really sweet of you." As we chatted, I noticed that Zane seemed evasive when I asked about what had happened the previous night. I let it slide, not wanting to pry, but my curiosity was piqued. Who was this man, and what was he hiding? As we continued to talk, I found myself feeling more and more at ease around Zane. I liked him, I realized, more than I'd expected to. There was something about him that drew me in, something that made me want to know more. After a while, I glanced at my watch and realized I was running late for work. "I'm so sorry, Zane, but I have to go," I said, standing up. Zane nodded, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. "It was great seeing you, Adelaide. Thanks for coming to visit me." I smiled back at him, feeling a flutter in my chest. "I'll come back and visit you again soon, okay?" I said, before turning and walking out of the room. As I made my way back to the car, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. I had enjoyed my time with Zane, and I was looking forward to seeing him again. When I arrived at the office, Rachel was waiting for me with a cup of coffee. "Good morning, Adelaide," Rachel said, smiling. "How was your visit with... um... the man from the hospital?" I smiled, taking the cup of coffee from Rachel. "It was good, thanks," I said. "He's recovering well." Rachel nodded, her eyes shining with understanding. As the day went on, I found myself thinking about Zane more and more. I wondered what he was doing, if he was thinking of me. I felt a flutter in my chest every time I thought about him, and I couldn't help but wonder if this was the start of something special. After a long day at the office, I headed home, exhausted but exhilarated. As I walked through the front door, I was greeted by Maria, who was waiting for me with a warm smile. "Welcome home, Miss Adelaide," Maria said, taking my coat and purse. "How was your day?" I smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. "It was good, thanks," I said. "Just busy." Maria nodded, her eyes shining with understanding. "I'm sure you'll be happy to relax now," Maria said. "Can I get you something to drink? Maybe some tea or coffee?" I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Maria. "That would be great, thanks," I said. As Maria handed me a cup of steaming hot tea, I took a sip, feeling the warmth spread through my body. I closed my eyes, savoring the moment, and let out a deep sigh. It had been a long day, but it had also been a good one. And as I sat there in the quiet of my home, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. I knew that tomorrow would bring its own set of challenges, but for now, I was content to simply be. As I sat there, sipping my tea and feeling the warmth of the evening sun on my skin, I couldn't help but think about Zane again. I wondered what he was doing, if he was thinking of me too. I got up from my chair and walked over to the window, looking out at the beautifully manicured garden below. My parents were still out there, strolling hand in hand and enjoying the peacefulness of the evening. I smiled to myself, feeling grateful for the loving family I had. I knew that not everyone was as fortunate as I was, and I made a mental note to appreciate my family more often. As I stood there, lost in thought, Maria came into the room with a gentle knock on the door. "Miss Adelaide, I've drawn you a bath," Maria said, smiling. "I thought you might like to relax and unwind after your long day." I turned to her, feeling a surge of gratitude. "Thank you, Maria," I said, smiling. "That sounds wonderful." Maria nodded and gestured towards the bathroom. "Your bath is ready whenever you are, Miss Adelaide," Maria said. I nodded and made my way to the bathroom, feeling a sense of anticipation wash over me. I loved taking long, relaxing baths, and I knew that this one would be especially welcome after my stressful day. As I soaked in the warm water, I closed my eyes and let out a deep sigh. I felt my muscles relax, one by one, and my mind began to unwind. I stayed in the bath for a long time, simply enjoying the peacefulness of the moment. But eventually, I knew I had to get out and start getting ready for bed. As I dried myself off and put on a comfortable pair of pajamas, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. I knew that tomorrow would bring its own set of challenges, but for now, I was at peace. I climbed into bed and settled in for the night, feeling grateful for the comfortable bed and the quiet, peaceful room. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be. But just as I was starting to fall asleep, my phone rang, shrill in the silence. I groggily reached over to answer it, wondering who could be calling me at such a late hour. "Hello?" I said, trying to sound alert. "Adelaide, it's Dr. Lee from the research lab," the voice on the other end replied. "I'm afraid we've encountered a problem with your treatment..." My heart sank as I listened to Dr. Lee's words, my mind racing with fear and uncertainty. What did he mean? What was wrong with my treatment? I felt a sense of panic wash over me, and I sat up in bed, my heart racing. "What is it, Dr. Lee?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. "We've discovered some unexpected side effects," Dr. Lee said, his voice serious. "We need to discuss this further with you." I felt a sense of dread wash over me. What kind of side effects? And what did they mean for my future? "Okay," I said, trying to sound calm. "I'll come in tomorrow to discuss it." "Good," Dr. Lee said. "We'll see you then." I hung up the phone, feeling a sense of unease wash over me. What was going on? And what did it mean for my life? As I lay back in bed, I couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty that had settled over me. I knew that tomorrow would bring answers, but for now, I was left with only questions. I tried to push the thoughts aside and focus on getting some rest, but my mind kept racing. I couldn't help but wonder what the future held, and whether I was ready to face it. Eventually, I drifted off to sleep, but my dreams were filled with worries and fears. I knew that tomorrow would bring a new set of challenges, and I wasn't sure if I was ready to face them. The next morning, I woke up feeling anxious and unsure. I knew that I had to face whatever was coming my way, but I wasn't sure if I was ready. I got dressed and headed to the kitchen for breakfast, I felt afraid. What would the day bring? And how would I handle it? I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. I knew that I was strong, and that I could handle whatever came my way.
