Chapter 3

2262 Words
Arora rolls her eyes when her friend starts to shriek the moment, she sees her climbing out of the car.   “Did your dad do that? I heard about your car. I’m sorry Arora. Are you okay? How are you feeling.” Tricia can be a bit overwhelming if you don’t know her.   “Yeah, thanks. I’m okay. I forgot my book for chemistry!” She scratches around her bag and feels agitated that she could make such a mistake.   “It’s okay, we can work together.”   “Cool, thanks.” She feels his eyes on her the instant they walk into the building.   Tricia is rambling on about some social thing as usual and it’s why their friendship works so well. She talks and Arora listens. They walk down the passage to their first class and she hears the girls somewhere freaking out a little.   It can only be because of him!   She grabs her lip gloss from her bright pink backpack and looks up before putting it on.   “Oeh, I love that colour on you!” Tricia gushes and drags her into the classroom.   The rest of the day she finds it troublesome to concentrate feeling his eyes on her the entire time. What is it with him? He can have any girl or guy in the school but he seems to be fascinated with driving her insane.   At lunch time she grabs some food and Tricia pulls her to their usual table when a pair of strong arms clamp down around her waist and pulls her in another direction. She glares at Tricia who just shrugs.   “You have been avoiding me, Arora. I don’t like that.”   Her glare turns to him as her spine shivers at the thought of him touching her so closely.   “Your pets are going to talk. You better let go of me or you might find yourself without a damn date for the spring dance!”   He laughs making her skin crawl.   “You lost the bet.”   “I didn’t. Neither of us finished that race!” She pulls out from his grip only for him to pull her right back.   “I seem to remember it differently. Either way, your father agreed, and you will go with me.”   He shows her to a seat and she glares at him again, but sits down, not wanting to cause a scene. She hates it when there is too much attention on her. Her entire popular girl image is just so she can drive her dad insane.   She pushes the food around on her plate, not feeling hungry after their little chat, while he talks to the rest of his crew. They are laughing and joking and all she wants to do is get out of here.   She gets up and he grabs her wrist.   “Where are you going?”   “To pee, want to hold my hand?!” She bites back and he lets go of her hand.   They both know that she isn’t going to go to the bathroom, but with everyone around he can’t say anything. She smiles at him and grabs her books.   “Thanks for lunch.” She drops the bill next to him before walking off.   She can feel his gaze burning into her back and flips her hair back before grabbing Tricia’s arm and walking out of the lunch room.   “What’s going on with you two?” Tricia grins, but Arora is not in the mood.   If she tells her best friend that she has to go to this damn dance in the first place it will mean a shopping trip that she is not in the mood for either. But then, it might just be what she needs to distract her from her current predicament.   After school Dremon is sitting on the hood of his car when they walk out the doors to her driver waiting for them. She tells him that they are going shopping and he tries to stop them by telling her that her father said she is to go straight home.   “Take me shopping or I will walk there on my own.” She tilts her head and he knows not to fight her on it.   He opens the door and she and Tricia jump in. When her dad finds out she went shopping for a dress for this stupid dance, he won’t be angry anymore.   In the end she enjoys the shopping more than she wants to admit and picks up three dresses to choose from for the dance. They joke around in her room for a while before a knock on her door forces them into silence.   Her brother walks in and studies Tricia from head to toe. He has always had a small crush on her, but their father will never allow him to marry out of their line. He is a purist and believes that they should be with their own kind.   Not that he has anything against other supernatural’s, he just believes that if they were to taint the necromancer blood it could be catastrophic.   “Dinner is ready.”   “Okay,”   She walks Tricia out before going to the dining room, but her father isn’t there. She wondered why her brother told her that dinner is ready so early in the afternoon… Then walks to his study just in case he is looking for her.   “Father?”   “Come in darling.” The term of endearment lasts for a full second this time before she sees the hurt and anger flush into his eyes.   “You were looking for me?”   “Yes,” He seems to take a moment to think about what to say next before standing up from behind his desk.   “Arora, I know things are difficult for you, but please, for once just listen to me and do what I ask.”   She knows that he is talking about the dance… What else could it be?   “I already bought a dress… Or at least a couple to choose from, dad.”   ***   Dremon walks into his father’s office feeling agitated. They are going to take longer to fix her car! He wanted to surprise her with it at school, but now it seems it will only be ready around the time they go to the dance.   “Dremon, how was school?”   “Father, we need to get the arrangement in place.”   “Why? What is going on?”   He doesn’t want to sound as if he is a nagging child, but he wants her and his family agrees that it would be a good match. When his mom first suggested he think about her as a possible future wife, he thought she was joking.   The girl that brought her dead mother back to life and nearly wiped out all of their kind along with it? But the more he found out about her, the more she started to intrigue him.   Even if their marriage ends up being one of convenience, she would be a gem by his side. She is beautiful, confident and definitely intelligent.   When he saw her at the races, she woke up something inside him that he isn’t able to force down. His parents brought up the idea of marrying her, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to get married yet.   However, he is finishing school this year and it’s time to take his place in the family business. He knew dropping the bad boy image would have to go at some point, but just thinking about it makes him feel slightly sad.   A new era is about to start in his life, meaning he needs a new kind of woman by his side.   ***   Arora has dinner in silence while her brother boasts about his escapades at the office. She can see that her dad is preoccupied and not really listening either. What could possibly have him so distracted that he’s not even listening to his favourite child?   She asks to be excused after dinner, but he stops her asking her brother to give them a minute alone.   “Arora, I know you don’t like Dremon, but please. Don’t mess this up. Just go to the dance and behave yourself, okay?”   What is it about having to attend the dance with Dremon that has her dad in such a knot? Rushing up the stairs to her room, she decides to shove it to the back of her mind so she can concentrate on studying for her last exams.   When she is done with her year, she plans on taking a year off and travelling before deciding what to do next. It will be fun just getting out into the human world and not be who she is.   “That girl.” She sighs before pulling a book in front of her.   At around three in the morning, it feels as if her eyes are about to cross when she puts her books down and leans her head on her arm. Her eyes flutter closed feeling dry and she falls asleep.   ***   A hard knock on her door wakes her up and the moment she looks at the watch on the wall, she realizes that she is late for school! Rushing through her room to get ready, she grabs her bag and finds her driver outside the door.   “What are you doing here? I’m late! Come on!”   ***   The week flies by and before she can blink its Friday. She would usually go out to the races, but with her car gone, and the exams… She doesn’t really have the time to think about it. She would have loved to go for a race though.   She hears a car drive up to the house and rushes over to the window. If her dad is having a meeting for dinner, she might be lucky enough to escape dinner and have some more time to study, but the people who climb out of the car makes her gasp.   Dremon, and his parents! What are they doing here?   Her brother knocks on the door and she recognizes it from his knock. He is always figuring out some stupid code knock. She rips open the door wanting to know what he wants only to find Dremon standing there.   How the hell did he get up here that fast?   “Hi.” He smiles and she feels the now familiar shiver run down her spine.   She has been trying her best to avoid him all week, but he keeps finding her…   “Hi, I’m busy.”   “Oh, yeah? With what?” He pushes past her, walking into her room and picks up her text book.   “Studying! That’s mine. Didn’t your mother ever teach you not to just walk into other people’s rooms and touch their stuff?”   “Well, you can ask her at dinner if you like. Get dressed… And wear something nice. We are going out.” He winks and smiles before leaving the room.   “What?!” She mumbles and stares at the door.   Who is going out? What is he talking about? But she gets dressed in black pants suite with a luminous pink blouse. If he was in her room, her father probably told him to come here, and if they intend on forcing her to go, she will deal with it as a business meeting.   She checks herself once in the full-length mirror and puts on her pink lip gloss. Her dad would have preferred a dress, of course, and the pink just makes him mad.   When she walks down the stairs, they are all waiting in the foyer and his mom smiles politely.   “Don’t you look pretty.” She smiles, but Arora can see her dad’s disapproval.   “Thank you, Mrs. Daemonne.”   She knows well enough not to ask too many questions right away and let the evening play out. When her brother doesn’t join them, she finds it strange. They get into the huge black limousine and the driver pulls out of the driveway. She listens to the conversation to try and figure out what all this is about, but their parents are talking about business, so she tunes them out.   Then she feels the coolness of his skin push through the fabric of her pants. Dremon actually put his hand on her leg in front of their parents!! She quickly looks up at her father, then at his parents who are all in deep conversation and haven’t noticed a thing.   “Don’t move.” Dremon whispers in her ear and her entire body breaks out in goosebumps.   “Who do you think you are? You can’t tell me what to do.” She replies, trying to keep her voice as soft as possible.   “Oh, we will see about that.” His mysterious smile and look at their parents make her stomach pull into a knot.   The car pulls up in front of the restaurant and when it’s her turn to climb out, he holds out his hand to help her, and slides his arm around her waist when they walk in.   This time she is convinced that her father can’t miss the gesture, but still, he says nothing! He pulls the chair out for her when they reach the table and their parents sit down looking very happy with themselves.   Even her father is looking happier than normal. This entire evening is just… Weird!
