CHAPTER 1
(3)Three Months Earlier
Brielle's P.O.V
(Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock)
I bolted upward in a sitting position in my bed, frightened out of my sleep by the sudden noise...or was it that dream... unconsciously I put my hand to my throat, swallowing hard to take a long shaky breath.
I realised after a while that the sudden noise I heard was just my younger sister knocking at my door. I fell back in bed, with both hands covering my face to stifle a groan. (Muffled groan)
I wanna tell her to piss off and leave me alone, but after the dream I just had...I can’t even find my voice. All I could do was lay there and stare at the ceiling. These dreams are getting worse...even more...they are starting to feel so goddamn real.
Without my permission, my mind started drifting back to the dream...a recurring dream I've been having for the past three weeks... a dream where I’m wondering barefoot through a forest I know I’ve never been to, and I’m dressed in something resembling a hospital gown...it was all torn and dirty, spots of mud and blood all over me.
{The more I walk, the denser and the darker the forest got...hundred-foot tall trees dripping with Spanish Moss, fog rolling in from all angles and an eerie silence that drags on and on for miles. Then...the whispers started.
(Gabriella, where are you...come find me...I need you...you need me...find me...you’re in danger...we're in danger...find me Gabby, find me! FIND ME!!!)
The dream usually ends there, but that wasn’t the case with this one.
The whispers got louder, so loud I had to cover my ears...but little did that do.
Unable to block out the whispers, I took off running...with no idea where I’m headed, I twist and weave through trees, trying to find a way out.
I’ve lost count of how many times I tripped and fell, or how many times I was slapped across the face by low hanging branches...and let’s not even mention the jagged stones under my poor shoeless feet.
I came to an opening in what seemed like the middle of the forest, after running for what felt like hours...a huge clearing, with a single gigantic tree perched in the middle.
I halted at the edge of the clearing, staring up at the gigantic tree in astonishment...the next thing I know, a rather peculiar beam of light came hurling down from the moon...showering the tree in its glow.
At that sight, my first instinct was to run the other way, any way really, as long as I could get away from here.
But I wasn’t moving; no matter what I did, no matter how much I pulled or clawed at my feet, they wouldn’t move.
I looked down only to see the ground covering my feet until they were embedded there. I felt an immense wave of panic crash over my body...I started shaking and wriggling my feet, pulling as hard as I can trying to get free; of course it was all of no use, but I couldn’t give up.
The desperation to be free and out of this forsaken forest was all that was on my mind, I was so out of it that I didn’t even take notice of the person standing a few feet away from me, until...
“That won’t work, child.”
My head shot up at the same time as a loud gasp flew out of my mouth. The action had me doubling over, though my feet remained rooted. The voice sounded as if the owner was right next to my ear, though she wasn’t near me at all.
“I know you’re scared child, but it will all make sense soon...get up, child.” I remained there on the forest floor staring up at the figure of the owner of that voice...a woman...a naked one at that; with long white hair flowing just past her bottom, skin almost as white as her hair, big blue eyes and what looks like tribal tattoos all over her body.
“Get up!” She commanded in a tone too soft to hold such authority, yet still, I lost all control of my body. The only thing I'm in control of now is my mind...and even that I was starting to doubt.
As horrified as I was, I tried to remain calm...until I got to the base of the tree, that is.
It looked so much more terrifying up close.
The woman turned to me...no hint of emotion on her face, no way of figuring out what she was thinking.
I opened my mouth to ask her a question, but no words came out. That’s when a whole new wave of panic hit me...although it never lasted, because my missing voice was forgotten in an instant after I heard a deep menacing growl coming from behind the tree.
With the fact that my body was no longer under my control, there was nothing I could do but watch in horror as a huge white wolf stalked out from behind that beautifully horrific tree.
“Do not be afraid child.” She cooed to me. But all I could focus on was the snarling wolf ambling toward me.
The whispers came as screams this time, desperate cries...I want to cover my ears but I can’t, tears streaming down my face turn to blood. I try to shout but there is still no sound as the wolf continues over to me slowly. I fell to my knees defeated and exhausted.
The woman who was just standing there, spread her arms and started chanting in a strange language I could not understand; “(Ra cu sabati diamoré gonalo a tietè. Ra cu sabati diamoré gonalo a tietè.)” then she touched the head of the wolf and the symbol of a crescent moon appeared on its forehead.
She then came behind me and said the chant but it sounded a little different this time; “(Ra cu sabati debutanali ochonta a tietè. Ra cu sabati debutanali ochonta a tietè.)” she also placed the same hand on my head and I could feel an imprint of the same crescent moon forming on my forehead.
The woman then sauntered over to the tree with her back to it and speaking in the same language, I guess; “(Jovialnie a shamela Arcosanti, Lucien...)” She called a name and to my surprise the wolf turned its head to her, as if waiting for instructions.
She took a few more steps backward, her back now on the tree...and just when I thought things couldn’t get any stranger, the woman kept going backward into the tree and it just opened up, but right before it took her in, she said one final word in that strange language to the wolf.
“(Acràbatā).” With that, the wolf turned back to me with a mean glare then lunged at my throat.}
“Brielle?” My sister's voice came once more, prompting me out of my thoughts.
“Brielle, please wake up. I don’t wanna be late for my practice session. We have a match coming up this week and I can’t miss or be late for practice again.” I rolled my eyes at her words, “Just be ready in 15 minutes...please.” She ordered, then I heard her footsteps disappear downstairs.
At this point, I can’t wait to get my car back, this early morning thing is not my cup of tea.
‘How long does it take to service a damn car anyway?’ I asked myself while forcing my way out of bed.
The shower was quick, quicker than I have ever taken before...of course, I had to skip washing my hair to save time so little miss Co-Captain of the Quiz Team can get to school an hour and a half earlier than everyone else.
Heaving a sigh, I wrapped myself in a towel...but while unfolding the towel something fell out...a folded piece of paper.
I picked it up and unfolded it to reveal a short note of four words, written on one side in capital letters and underlined three times with three exclamation points.
'REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE'!!!
Looking at the piece of paper in my hand, dumbfounded, I read the words over and over again in my mind...Remember who you are...Remember who I am? But I already know who I am. My name is Gabriella Renee Remington, a 19yrs old student, Captain and Co-Captain of the Cheerleading and Volleyball teams at Torrington’s School of the Elite. I have a promising career as a Veterinarian and I already know who I’ll spend the rest of my life with...I know who I am.
...Then, why does it feel like something is missing, like a piece of me is missing? Does this note have anything to do with the dreams I’ve been having?...
“Brielle! Come on! We are going to be late!” Emma shouted, jerking me out of the trance this note had me locked in for God knows how long.
Not wanting to waste anymore of her Highness’ time, I re-folded the note, hurried out of the bathroom and tucked it into my handbag.
With a speed I seemed to have conjured up over the past week, just so I can keep up with Emma's extra early morning schedule...I threw on a dark grey tank top with a pair of black straight jeans, a red belt, a red jacket and my limited edition grey, red and black spike-heeled Jay's.
With not much time to give myself a proper hairstyle, I just ran a brush through my waist-length jet black hair and caught it in a high ponytail. I don’t normally wear make-up so, no hold up there.
Emma was at my bedroom door again hurrying me. "Bri, please tell me you're ready now." She whined. But instead of answering her, I put on my favourite perfume then check myself in the mirror to make sure my speedy dressing wasn't too off.
Satisfied, I grabbed my handbag and opened the door just in time to see Emma's hand raised about to start pounding on my door again.
"Finally! Let's go. I already got Mable to make you some pancakes and scrambled eggs so you can eat when you get to school." She explained, walking ahead of me.
"Gee, thanks." I said completely void of emotion.
"Oh come on, don't be like that." She said turning to look at me, but I just walked right by her.
"You're gonna be late, remember." I reminded her.
She heaved a sigh and followed after me...
