Chapter 2: Banishment and Shadows

1232 Words
The freezing winds of the wild lands shrieked louder than any wolf. Luna pulled her mantle tight around her shoulders but it did little to shield her from the biting cold. Her breathe came in ragged puffs as she staggered deeper into the forest. The weight of betrayal hung heavy on her chest but the burning taste for vengeance in her heart kept her moving. She hadn’t stopped moving since they casted her out beyond the Crescent Moon pack border. Her feet were numb and blistered from the rough ground but she didn’t slow down. Survival instincts pushed her forward. Her wolf whimpered faintly in her mind, still weakened by what had happened to her and the trial. “You’ll never step your foot into this packagain Luna” Magnus voice echoed in her mind. He teeth clenched at the memory of the Alpha’s decree. Calder’s betrayal cut deeper than any blade. The man she loved, the one she had trusted with every fiber of her being had stood silent as the pack condemned her. Not a word of defense did he speak in her favor, not even a flicker of guilt was in his eyes. Her heart twisted at the memory but she forced herself to push the pain aside and not get distracted. Her body ached badly but her spirit ached even more but she will survive. She will return and when she does, there will be justice. The trees thickened as she moved further into the forest. Her stomach growled but hunger was the least of her concerns. Wolves roamed these wild lands and Luna was no longer under the protection of the Crescent Moon pack. She was alone— branded a traitor. Betrayal burned in her chest. Calder’s face haunted her. The stormy blue eyes that had once looked at her with love, now cold and indifferent as he by stood while Magnus announced her exile. He didn’t fight for her neither did he speak on her behalf. The memory was a festering wound. One she couldn’t escape. A branch snapped in a distance. Luna froze. Her senses sharpening. The forest was never truly silent but this sound was different — a predatory stillness that prickled the back of her neck Luna squatted so low with her fingers brushing the icy ground for balance. Her heart pounded fast as she caught the faint scent of iron and musk. She smelled blood. She sensed wolves. The first rogue wolf burst through the bushes. It eyes gleaming with hunger. Luna rolled to the side as its jaws snapped where her throat had been. She landed on the frozen ground with pain jolting up her spine. Another wolf burst out with another wolf following its lead. They circled her, growls rumbling from their chests. Luna’s breathe came in ragged gasps. Her body was weak but refused to die there. “Come on “ she snarled, baring her teeth. “ I’m not afraid of you”. The largest wolf lunged and Lina met it head-on. Her fist connected with its snout but the impact barely fazed it. It’s claw scratched her side, tearing through the fabric and her skin. Luna let out a scream, blood soaking into her clothes. The second wolf leaped at her from behind. Luna twisted but the pains she was feeling slowed her movements. Claws grazed her shoulder, making her to stumble. Immediately her vision blurred but she forced herself to stay upright. Is this it? She thought bitterly. Exiled and torn apart by wolves? A flash of silver light blinded her. The wolves cried out, recoiling as the light seared through the darkness. Luna collapsed to her knees gasping for air. Her body trembled, the mark on her hand burning like fire. Footsteps crunched through the snow. Luna’s vision wavered, but she caught a glimpse of a figure moving towards her— a woman with dark approached with silver. Her presence was commanding “Stay down” the woman ordered, her voice firm. The wolves hesitated then fled into the shadows, their howls fading into the distance. The woman knelt beside Luna, her eyes sharp and assessing. “ you are lucky I found you” she said. Luna tried to speak but her throat was dry and pain stole her face. “Save your strength” the woman said “you are bleeding badly”. The last thing Luna saw before darkness claimed her was the woman’s face, framed by the silver glow of the moon. Luna woke up to the scent of herbs and warmth. Her body ached, but the sharp sting of her wounds had dulled. She was lying on a bed of fur inside a small, dimly lit cave. The walls glimmered faintly with mineral deposits, casting a soothing light. The wan sat by a fire, grinding herbs in a tone bowl. Her movements were precise, each motions purposeful. “You are awake” the woman said without looking up. “Good. I thought I might have to drag you back from death’s door”. Luna struggled to sit up, wincing as pains flared in her side. “Who…….are you?” “Eira”, the woman said simply. She set her bowl aside and approached Luna, holding a steaming cup. “Drink this”. Luna eyed the cup warily. “What is it”. “A healing tonic. Unless you’ll prefer to bleed out?. Eira’s brow arched. Reluctantly, Luna took the cup and sipped. The bitter liquid burned her throat, but warmth spread through her veins, easing the pain. “Why did you tell me?” Luna asked, her voice hoarse. Eira’s expression was unreadable. “Because you have a destiny to fulfill, whether you like it or not”. Luna frowned “destiny?”. “You carry the blood of the ancient line” Eira said. “That is why that mark appeared on your hand during the blood moon”. Luna’s hand trembled as she looked down. The mark was faint now but she remembered the searing pain and blinding light. “What does it mean?” Luna demanded. Eira’s gaze was intense. “It means you are not just some exiled wolf. You are part of something much bigger— a power Magnus fears and wants to control”. Luna’s chest tightened at the mention of Magnus. “He is the reason I’m out here. He framed me, took everything from me. “Her voice wavered with rage. “I’ll kill him”. Eira’s eyes gleamed with something akin to approval. “Good, anger is a powerful weapon but only if you control it”. Lina clenched her fist. “I’ll do whatever it takes”. “Then we start now”. Eira said. “If you want revenge, you’ll need to be stronger— physically, mentally and spiritually. Magnus won’t fall easily.” Luna met Eira’s gaze, her resolve hardening. “Teach me”Luna said. Eira smiled faintly. “You may regret that request”. As Eira turned back to the fire, the mark on Luna’s hand flared again, a flicker of light that cast eerie shadows across the cave walls. Luna clenched her fist, the heat of the mark burning into her skin. She wasn’t just a rogue anymore. She was something far more dangerous.
