CHAPTER 4: THE PLAN FOR RETURN

1280 Words
The moon hung low in the sky, casting very big shadows all around the forest. The scent of pine mingled with the cool breeze as Luna stood in the center. Her breathe was steady despite the sweat that was clinging to her brows. Her muscles ached but the burn was satisfying—a testament of her transformation. Eira watched from a distance, her arms crossed and a faint smile playing on her lips. “You are getting better” she said.Luna wiped her forehead with the back of her hand. “Not good enough”. “You are never satisfied. Are you?” Eira asked. “That stubbornness will serve you well— if it doesn’t kill you first”. Luna smirked. “I’ll take my chances”. Her body felt stronger than it had been in years. The wilderness had toughened her and Eira’s training had sharpened her instincts but it wasn’t just her physical strengththat had changed. Luna’s mind was sharper, her resolve unshakable. She was no longer the betrayed mate cast out in disgrace. She was a force to be reckoned with and she was ready to reclaim everything Magnus had stolen. Later that evening, Eira spread a map across the stone table in the cave. The flickering firelight brightened the rough manuscript, casting shadows that danced across the walls. “This is the eastern crest”, Eira said tracing a line with her finger. “The terrain is rough but less guarded. It’s your best chance to sneak into the pack unnoticed”. Luna leaned over the map, her eyes compressing. “And once I’m inside?” Eira’s expression grew serious. “You’ll need a cover. Magnus has tightened security and your face isn’t exactly unforgettable”. Luna’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. “I’ll take that as a compliment”. Eira ignored the compliment. “You’ll pose as a traveling herbalist seeking refuge. The pack has been dealing with injuries and illnesses. Magnus won’t turn away someone who can be of assistance”. Luna’s brows lined “herbalist? That’s a stretch even for me”. “You know enough to fake it” Eira said firmly “and I’ll give you some tips and remedies to carry with you”. Lina exhaled bitterly. She hated the idea of deception but it was necessary. “Fine, but if Magnus suspects who I am—“. The“He won’t” Eira assured her. “Not if you keep your emotions in check”. Luna’s jaw tightened. Keeping her emotions in check was easier said than done especially when Calder was involved. Memories of Calder. That night, Luna laid on her makeshift bed near the fire. Her mind was restless. The warmth of the flames did little to ease the cold ache on her chest . Calder’s face flickered in her thoughts—stormy blue eyes filled with hurt and confusion. She tried to bury the memories and her emotions but they clung to her like shadows. She remembered the way he had looked at her at her trial, torn between loyalty to Magnus and their bond. He didn’t speak a word in her defense neither did he fight for her . That betrayal had cut deeper than any other wound but there were other memories—memories of stolen moments beneath the stars , of laughter and warmth that had once filled her heart. Luna clenched her fist. She couldn’t afford to dwell on the past. Calder was part of the pack that had casted her out and she would not let lingering feelings cloud her judgement. “ I don’t care about him anymore” she whispered to the fire as if saying it aloud would make it true. Eira’s voice cut through the silence. “Lying to yourself won’t help”. Luna not realizing Eira’s presence. The older woman’s expression was unreadable but her eyes held a knowing light. “I’m not lying” Luna said defensively . Eira arched an eyebrow “ if you say so” Luna sat up looking irritated “did you come here to lecture me?”. “No” Eira said with her tone turning serious. “I came to warn you” Luna’s brows furrowed “warn me about what?”. Eirahesitated, her gaze flickering to the fire. “There’s a prophecy tied to your bloodline. One that speaks of great power and great destruction”. Luna’s heart immediately skipped a beat. “What kind of prophecy?”. Eira’s vice was stern. “The bloodline of the Crescent descendants carries a dual fate. To lead or to destroy. You have the power to command rogue wolves but the power comes with a great price. If you let vengeance consume you, you’ll be become the very thing you seek to destroy” Luna’s chest tightened “And if I don’t seek vengeance?”. “ Then you risk losing control of your power altogether “ Eirasaid “The bloodline doesn’t simply fade—it demands to be wielded “. Silence stretched between them, heavy and unspoken fears. “I don’t have a choice” Luna said finally. “Magnus has to be stopped “ “Yes” Eira agreed “but how you stop him will determine your fate”. Luna met Eira’s gaze , her resolve hardening. “ Then I’ll make sure I defeat him the right way” Eira’s lips curved into a faint smile “I hope you do”. The following morning, the forest was shrouded with mist as Luna prepared to leave . Her pack was light but filled with essential supplies—remedies, weapons and the map Eira had given her. Eira stood by the cave entrance, her expression a mixture if pride and concern. “You’ve come a long way, Luna”. “Thanks to you”, Luna admitted. Eira’s gaze softened. “Be careful. Magnus is cunning and he won’t hesitate to destroy annoy who threaten him”. “I know” Luna said. “And Luna…” Eira hesitated. “ if things go wrong, don’t be afraid to run. Revenge isn’t worth your life”. Luna met her gaze, with determination blazing in her eyes. “I’m not running Eira. Not this time”. Eira sighed and nodded. “Then may the moon guide you”. Without another word Luna turned and disappeared into the forest. Her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and anticipation. The Journey to the Crescent Moon’s territory was very long. The forest thinned as she neared the pack’s bothers, giving away the rocky terrain and steep ridges. The air grew colder and the shadows stretched longer. Lina moved swiftly, her senses sharp. She knew the patrol schedules by heart thanks to Eira’s intel. Timing was everything. She squatted behind a boulder. Her breath became shallow as she spotted two guards passing. Their voices were low. “Alpha’s orders. No one gets in and out without clearance “ one of them said. Their laughter faded as they moved on. Luna waited until the forest was silent again before slipping pass the boundary marker. Her pulse quickened. She was officially back in the pack territory. The familiar scent of the Crescent Moon park filled her senses, stirring memories she had tried to bury. This was her home once but now it was a battle ground. Luna’s hand brushed against the mark on her palms the tingling sensation grounding her. “I’m coming for you Magnus” she whispered .
