Kairo didn’t move.
He stood in the doorway like a carved shadow, chest heaving, eyes pitch-black, a sign his wolf had surged to the surface.
Aria’s breath hitched.
She’d seen him angry.
She’d seen him protective.
She’d seen him restrained.
But this—
this was something deeper.
Raw.
Untamed.
Dangerous in a way that made her thighs clench involuntarily.
“Kairo…” her voice trembled.
He didn’t answer.
He inhaled once, a deep, shuddering breath and the sound that left his chest was almost a groan.
“You’re burning,” he rasped.
Aria’s fingers curled in the sheets.
“I don’t… I don’t know what’s happening—”
“Yes, you do.”
His voice was dark velvet.
“You feel me.”
Her pulse jolted violently.
Kairo stepped inside and closed the door behind him with a slow, deliberate finality.
He locked it.
Aria’s heartbeat stuttered.
“Kairo—”
“Don’t run,” he warned quietly, “unless you want to be chased.”
She froze.
He crossed the room toward her, each step radiating dominance so strong it wrapped around her like heat.
Her body reacted before her mind did:
A small, helpless sound slipped from her throat.
Kairo’s eyes flashed.
“Aria,” he breathed, “don’t make that sound again.”
“Why?” she whispered.
His jaw tightened.
“Because I’ll take you if you do.”
Her entire body shivered.
He reached the edge of the bed but didn’t touch her, not yet.
He gripped the wooden frame instead, claws denting the wood as he fought himself.
“I shouldn’t be in this room,” he said through his teeth.
“Then go,” Aria whispered, though her voice shook with a different truth.
“You don’t want me to go.”
Her lips parted.
She didn’t—
she couldn’t—
lie.
His jaw flexed again, his breathing erratic.
“Aria… look at me.”
She lifted her eyes slowly.
The hunger in his gaze nearly undid her.
“That’s it,” he whispered, stepping closer.
“Let me see it.”
“See what?” she breathed.
“What you’re feeling.”
She swallowed hard.
“I can’t stop it.”
“You’re not meant to.”
He moved closer, lowering himself slightly, his body heat brushing her knees.
The bond surged so strongly she gasped, her back arching involuntarily as the heat in her belly intensified.
Kairo cursed softly and grabbed her knees, pulling her gently but firmly to the edge of the bed.
Aria startled.
“Kairo—!”
“I need to feel your pulse.”
Her breath quickened as he lifted her knee into his hand.
He pressed his thumb to the inside of her thigh, not high, not inappropriate, but dangerously close.
Her entire body clenched.
Her breath left her in a trembling sigh.
Kairo’s head fell forward, forehead brushing her knee, a low groan vibrating from his chest.
“Gods…” he whispered. “You’re reacting exactly like I feared.”
She trembled. “Feared?”
His eyes lifted, shaking with restraint.
“Because if this gets any stronger, you’ll crave me so badly you won’t be able to breathe without me.”
Aria’s pulse raced even faster.
“That’s already happening,” she whispered.
Kairo’s breath hitched.
His grip tightened.
His self-control shattered a little more.
“Aria,” he rasped, “I need you to understand something.”
She swallowed. “What?”
“If I touch you where your body is begging me to…”
He inhaled sharply.
“You won’t be able to stop me.”
She trembled.
“I’m not asking you to stop.”
Kairo jolted.
His hand flexed on her thigh.
His breath stuttered.
A growl escaped him, vibrating through her bones.
He leaned forward until his chest pressed against her knees, his lips inches from her skin.
“Don’t tempt me,” he murmured against her thigh.
“Not when you smell like this.”
“What do I smell like?” she whispered.
He lifted his head slowly.
“Mine.”
Her heart nearly stopped.
Before she could speak, another wave hit her, harder, hotter, deeper.
She gasped and clutched his shoulders, body shaking uncontrollably.
Kairo moved instantly, hands wrapping around her waist as she trembled against him.
“Breathe,” he commanded softly.
“I—I can’t—”
“Yes you can. I’ve got you.”
She fell forward into his chest, panting, overwhelmed.
His arms slid around her instinctively, pulling her tight against him, their breaths mixing, their hearts slamming together.
Her forehead pressed to his collarbone.
He froze.
Then slowly…
…his chin rested on her head.
“You’re in the first stage of the awakening,” he murmured.
“This is why I didn’t want you alone.”
Aria’s fingers curled into his shirt.
“It hurts…”
“I know.”
His hand stroked her back.
“But I’m here now.”
She broke a little at that, shoulders trembling as she leaned fully into him, letting the bond pull her closer.
Kairo tightened his arms around her, voice rough with emotion he couldn’t hide.
“Aria…”
He exhaled shakily.
“…if you knew what it does to me to feel you like this…”
She lifted her head slowly.
“Kairo,” she breathed, lips inches from his.
His eyes darkened.
Too dark.
He swallowed hard.
“We’re too close,” he whispered desperately.
“If I kiss you now… the bond will snap.”
Her heart hammered.
“Then kiss me.”
He inhaled sharply.
“Aria… don’t make me—”
She didn’t give him a chance to finish.
She leaned up—
And pressed her mouth to his.
Kairo broke.
Absolutely broke.
His hand flew to her jaw, the other to her waist as he kissed her back with a hunger he had been choking on for days.
Heat exploded through her body, the bond roaring to life, her spine arching, her breath shuddering, her fingers clutching him like he was the only thing keeping her alive.
Kairo groaned against her lips, a low, painful, beautiful sound.
The kiss deepened.
Darkened.
Turned into something that didn’t feel like a choice anymore.
It felt like fate.
When he finally tore his mouth from hers, his breathing was ragged.
His forehead pressed to hers.
His voice was a broken whisper.
“You don’t understand…”
He swallowed hard.
“One more kiss… and I won’t let you go.”
Aria trembled.
“I don’t want you to let go.”
Kairo’s eyes fluttered shut in torment.
“Aria…”
His thumb brushed her swollen lip.
“If we go any further tonight… the bond will claim you completely.”
Her breath hitched.
“And if it does?”
He opened his eyes.
Fire.
Hunger.
Possession.
“Then you become mine in every way.”
