Nate's POV
I went up to shower and to talk to Asher's father, Jayson, from the stories that my dad had told me. He used to be a lot like Asher. Since my mom died, my father has changed. He is not the same guy who told me stories about the two of them getting into trouble. I can tell he misses Mom and doesn't like to have me around as much because I took more after her than him. I am 6'5 with dirty blonde hair and my mom's golden brown eyes. I have a honey-colored tan, but that is mostly from all the training that I do. My aggression has to go somewhere. I knocked on the Beta office door that is located on the beta floor closest to the elevator. "Come in", he calls out in a commanding voice.
"Hey Uncle Jayson, I need some help with your bone-headed son", I called out, sighing, walking in the door, not even looking at him yet. I may be the future alpha, but my mom always taught me to rely on those closest to me. I heard a gasp and turned to see Eden sitting on Jayson's lap by the flush of her cheeks and his messed-up and crumpled clothes. I interrupted something. Gross, they are like second parents!
"Nate Jayson Barker!" Eden calls out in an authoritative tone that reminds me of all the times she caught Asher and I with our hands in the cookie jar, or pulling pranks on the many adults in the pack.
"What? "I didn't do anything this time, Aunt Eden!" I replied, giving her my best-offended face. She knows me too well though and will never fall for my tricks to get out of trouble.
She purses her lips and just shakes her head and lets out a little giggle. Oh no, she only does that when she is about to give a good old-fashioned lecture.
"You know that you're not supposed to be talking like that! "My sister, ya know, your mother would have given you a good wallop and made you pick out a switch for talking like that." She sighs like she is thinking about tanning my backside. My aunt Eden looks a lot like Mom, and it was kinda crazy that the sisters were mated to the alpha and beta of the same pack. As the daughters of an alpha, neither of them has ever had a problem expressing themselves.
"Darling, we both know that Asher has probably done something. It's been a while since Marcus has been so on edge about something. Plus, if Nate is calling him a bonehead, something tells me that he got into the liquor cabinet again." Jayson says, pecking her on the cheek, pulling her into him a little tighter, and letting out a chuckle at her, scolding me.
"Well, the thing is that it seems that Ash had gotten drunk. According to the warriors, he left with Scarlet' I paused waiting for the reaction I knew was coming. We have all thought the same thing and that is that they are mates. We will know next month when she turns 18. Hopefully, when he is fully mated and marked, he will calm down a bit. Eden's head shot up and her deep brown eyes narrowed at me, trying to decide if I was being mischievous or if I was telling her the truth.
"Well, this is not good." Uncle Jayson's eyes narrowed and he stroked his chin. "Where did he end up this time? Is this why your father has been in a bad mood this morning?" he asked with a faraway look in his eyes.
" Yep," I responded, popping the P. "He ended up in Arizona. I'm heading out there today. My flight leaves in a couple of hours. "Dad says that if this happens again then he will no longer have the approval to be my beta." I lowered my eyes, shaking my head. I have had this conversation with Asher before, yet he never listens to me. I can see why Dad would be in doubt about his abilities. To be honest, I do too. Not because he is a bad guy, but because he doesn't take anything seriously. All he seems to care about is partying and hooking up with girls. He is the man w***e out of our little group. Yeah, Kia has had a girlfriend or two, and I have had some girls after me for a while. It tends to happen when you are the future alpha. Every girl wants to be the Luna of a strong pack. I just wish that I would found my mate already, then I could take over from Dad and have the one person that will make me and the pack stronger.
"Well, go get him and when he gets back we will put him straight, right darling?" Uncle Jayson asks his wife as she relaxes in his lap. Well, this is not what I wanted to hear. I wanted someone else to go, and I was also looking for some better advice on how to get my beta under control. How am I supposed to be a good alpha if I can't even get Asher to get his s**t together already?
I can't say any of this though. I am the lower rank than the beta, so I have to follow orders and let him handle it. Plus, by the look on Eden's face, she is done going easy on her eldest son. So, I simply nodded my head and stood up, going to pack for the heat. Maybe Scarlett can just bring both of us back to the pack so we don't have to fly back. As wolves, we like to have our feet on the ground, not up in the air.
I finally made it to the airstrip, and boarded the plane. It's about a 4-to-5-hour flight. He is in Flagstaff, so at least it isn't as hot. Who knows the weather might be nice enough and we could stay the weekend? With it being Friday afternoon already, I don't want to just turn around right away. Wait a minute, why have I changed my mind about that? "Conner, is that you making me want to stay there?" I asked my wolf. He is so annoying sometimes and has been restless since I found out that I had to make this trip, to begin with. "Yes, maybe we can find our mate and bring her back here. I can feel something is going to happen. I have been talking to our father's wolf, and he says that it could be one of two things, either it's a trap, and we will have to fight our way out of there, or we will finally have our mate."
He replied to me and I couldn't believe that I didn't think about the possibility of a trap." Alright, I'll sleep on the plane, and then we will be ready for a fight." I replied as I sat in my seat, Well, here goes nothing. I thought as the plane took off.
