Chapter 3. Nate

Nate's POV

I was heading back to the packhouse after training had finally ended, as the future alpha needed to be a strong warrior to protect my pack once I take over. First, I need to find my Luna. I am 20 and have been looking for 2 years already but nothing. If I don't have my mate by the time I am 23, I will have to take a chosen, My father, Marcus Barker, has been the alpha for the past 25 years and is looking forward to being able to retire. My mother was killed by rouge vampires when I was 16. My father found his second chance mate 6 months after my mother was killed. Bethany, my father's second chance mate, is a very nice lady and has been a great Luna for the pack. She was there for my first shift with my father. She helped me sneak back onto the alpha floor after I got a little too drunk with Asher Wright, my best friend and future beta. Well, he might be if he could stop drinking so much. "Nate ... Asher ended up in another state after the party last night. You need to go get him and get him under control. This is the last time that I am going to let this go unpunished. Next time it happens, I will take it as a sign that he is not responsible enough to be a high-ranking member of this pack." My father mind linked me. Oh great, I thought with an eye roll, I don't know how he keeps doing this. We live in the forest. If he needed to stretch his legs after a few drinks, then he could do it here. But no, that isn't what happened. He always meets a girl and ends up in some crazy place. I wonder if he was with that Scarlet girl. Scarlet was a beautiful girl. She has fiery red hair, gray eyes, and a banging body. She is a local witch. She has the ability to teleport. Not all witches can do that, Moon Goddess. I hope that's how he ended up wherever he ended up. I have a pretty good idea where he is. She has family out in Arizona. I really hope he isn't with her. I don't want to go to that place. As a wolf, I run hot, and it is tough enough in the summer here in Georgia, Arizona is even hotter. "Where did he end up this time, Dad?" I replied to my dad via the mind link. You see werewolves are blessed by the Moon Goddess and have many abilities, extra strength, super attractiveness, and the ability to communicate with members of the pack with the mind link. That one is my favorite. I hardly ever have to carry around a phone, it makes it easier to just shift without having to look out for a phone all the time. I finally reached the pack house. It's a large ranch-style home on steroids. It has six floors; the first floor is the kitchen, dining room, game room, and indoor training facility for the younger pups. The second and third floors are where the guest rooms are located. It used to be housing for the omegas and the unmated warriors, but with the pack growing over the years, we had to start building bunkhouses. Well, in reality, they were just a smaller version of the pack house that was able to accommodate the members in a comfortable home-like atmosphere. The fourth floor is for the Gamma and their family. We haven't had a Gamma since he was killed trying to protect my mother. Travis, my father's Gamma, lost his mate a Fea named Brooke. She was the only one that I had ever met. The Fea are going extinct with the hunters tracking them down to either kill them or sell them to witches and warlocks that deal in black magic. So when he died, my father decided that it wasn't worth it to replace him. I was supposed to find my mate when I was 18 and take over my own ranking wolves. Travis knew my father from Alpha training. Yeah, Travis had alpha blood, but after he lost his mate, he gave up his pack and took the gamma position here in Blood Moon. A Gamma is the highest warrior and is in charge of protecting the Luna and the alpha children. They are also responsible for creating the training schedules for the warriors in the pack, and as a former alpha, the training he put us through was brutal, I'll tell you. The fifth floor is for the beta and their families. Jayson Wright is Asher's father, and he is my dad's best friend. Jayson and his mate Eden have a total of four children. Asher is the eldest, then there is Kia, who will be my gamma and already takes his role seriously. He has already started doing the training, and he is a beast. I can tell you it's a hard competition between the incoming and the former gamma. Then there is their one and only daughter, Ellie, who has just turned 18 and found her mate, an alpha of an allied pack, and lastly, there is baby Jake. He hates it when we call him that, because he's not a baby anymore at 14, and he is built like a brick house. The dude is 6 feet already, and he will only get bigger. Finally, the sixth floor is reserved for the alpha family. There is plenty of room there as I am an only child. "He is in Arizona with Scarlett", my father replies, and all I can think is this is not what I want to do. I guess I am booking a flight. My wolf, Conner, started to stir in my mind. "What's up, Conner? " I asked my wolf. "I don't know Nate. Something important is about to happen... I can feel it!" he replies with his tail wagging like crazy. Great, my wolf has lost his mind, but maybe something will happen besides me knocking some sense into my Beta.
