Chapter 4: The Other Woman

1027 Words
As Elizabeth walked to the table, Rachael had a sudden sense of uneasiness. Rachael felt like an impostor sitting across from Derek because of the way Elizabeth handled herself; she was so effortlessly gorgeous and put together. As she walked toward them, Elizabeth purred, "Derek," in a honey-like voice. Even in a crowded environment, she had the type of beauty that turned heads. The form-fitting outfit she wore highlighted her wonderfully sculpted shape, while her long, shiny hair fell over her shoulders. Every movement she took seemed planned as if she were always conscious of the people watching her. Rachael squirmed uneasily in her chair, feeling suddenly plain, underdressed, and completely out of place. She had never thought of herself as ugly, but it was difficult to feel anything but normal beside someone like Elizabeth. Derek briefly looked at Elizabeth before going back to Rachael. "This is Elizabeth, Rachel. She's most likely someone you've seen. Rachael here, Elizabeth. The words in the opening were weighty, like a slow-motion crash. Elizabeth's lips curled into a kind but patronizing grin as her gaze flitted over Rachael. She answered with ease, "Oh, of course," as if she hadn't really seen Rachael. "Good to meet you." In an attempt to conceal the hurt caused by Elizabeth's clear evaluation, Rachael managed a courteous nod. Is this the lady vying for Derek's affections? She kept asking herself whether she was more than her flawless appearance and calculating charm. Derek went on, "Rachael and I were just talking," yet Rachael could sense a tinge of stress in his tone. "We're learning more about one another." Elizabeth's grin widened as her gaze returned to Derek after remaining on Rachael for a little while longer. She remarked in a low, seductive voice, "Well, Derek, I'm sure you've heard a lot about me." However, I thought we might discuss some of the competition-related activities you have planned. Don’t you think it’s only fair? As Rachael saw Derek and Elizabeth's interactions, her stomach rumbled. She felt alienated by their familiarity and the ease with which they conversed. Given her composure and attractiveness, Elizabeth had most likely spent hours preparing every word and gesture. However, Rachael wasn't present because she had not engaged in any gaming. The fact that she had come here by mistake struck her again. "Rachael and I were just talking about the competition's nature," Derek said, his voice still smooth but his demeanor somewhat altered. "Actually, Elizabeth." I believe it's important to get to know one another free from outside influences. His remarks caused Rachael's eyebrows to rise in astonishment. She couldn't help but wonder if Derek was trying to be kind and make things better. It was difficult to determine whether he was being kind or if he really thought she had something that Elizabeth didn't. Elizabeth smiled, but her voice was brimming with cynicism as she responded, "Ah, I see." "How endearing." With deliberate motions, she sat across from them, her gaze fixed on Derek. With every passing moment, Rachael's discomfort increased. Elizabeth was obviously a master of both drama and conflict, but she wasn't the kind of woman who enjoyed either. However, Rachael couldn't help but feel a wave of resolve when Elizabeth took a seat. This was no longer only a chance circumstance. This really happened. Derek was genuine. Rachael possessed something that couldn't be judged in appearance: honesty. Elizabeth, on the other hand, may have everything else, including beauty, composure, and the benefit of experience. “So,” Elizabeth said, a little louder than she should have, “Derek and I have been discussing the charity event that is coming up. I have no doubt that this evening will be fantastic. The prospect of joining you there excites me. Her tone was sharp and implied that Elizabeth was already aware of her involvement in Derek's schemes. Rachael looked from one to the other to see how Derek would respond. His eyes were flitting between the two ladies as he leaned back in his chair and casually tapped his fingers on his coffee cup. Rachael said, "I'm looking forward to it as well," and she surprised herself with how composed her voice was. She wasn’t about to back down. Not when it was just getting started. Elizabeth's grin remained on her face even if her eyes narrowed slightly. She turned to Derek after saying politely, "I'm sure you are." "Having someone like you at my side would be wonderful. It will be a memorable evening. Elizabeth's emphasis on someone like you, as if to suggest that Rachael was just a stand-in, annoyed Rachael. However, she resisted letting Elizabeth irritate her. Wasn't Derek present with her? And she was determined not to allow anybody, particularly Elizabeth, to take it away from her. Derek stood up after a few more awkward small conversation exchanges. "I believe it's time for me to leave," he said firmly. "Rachael, I've loved our talk. We'll discuss the incident later, Elizabeth. Rachael got up and grabbed her handbag as Derek walked toward the door. She had lost her sense of what she was experiencing. She was fascinated, maybe even attracted to Derek, but she also felt vulnerable and uncertain because of the growing sense of competitiveness. Elizabeth too stood, her smile as well-practiced as ever, her posture flawless. "It's been a pleasure, Rachel," she added in an almost too pleasant voice. I'm sure I'll see you at the event. Rachael had an odd spectrum of feelings as she walked away. She felt more uneasy than ever, yet she was also pleased that Elizabeth was no longer there. Was this the start of something much bigger? Did she feel prepared to play? Before leaving, Derek gave her one last glance. "See you shortly, Rachael. Avoid overanalyzing situations. Rachael's phone buzzed in her pocket as she left the café and into the cold evening air. She looked at the screen below. Derek had sent a message. "We need to discuss, Rachel. Is it possible for us to meet tomorrow? I need to talk about something crucial. Her heart skipped a beat. Now what was he supposed to want to say?
