CHAPTER 3 Fated mates or not? Some concerned eyes had gathered just in front of Asteria's hut. They'd never seen a stranger in their territory before. Asteria had to address them that they had nothing to worry about. She went into her hut, closing the doors behind her. Samantha was in the kitchen boiling some native herbs that Mama Rita had mentioned. She moved over to where the stranger laid, his eyes closed, he was deep in sleep. She checked the twins who luckily hadn't woken up during the chaos. She sighed as she went to the kitchen where Sam was. “One handsome stranger he is,” Samantha said cautiously, setting bait for Asteria to chew on. “He's hurt,” she said, looking down at her bloodied palm. “And you saved him, that's like the weirdest thing that happened today, how did you know he was in danger?” Sam asked, still hoping Asteria would catch on to her gossip. “I don't know” Asteria was too tired to understand what Sam was cooking up so she gave up and said it directly. “Do you think you guys are fated mates?” She asked. She got Asteria then who looked up at her like she was the dumbest person on earth. “Did you just hear the nonsense you spewed from your mouth?” Samantha rolled her eyes, moving away from the pot and coming to stand beside Asteria. “You know Laura met her mate recently turns out it was Gale” she said “Ewww” Asteria said with a laugh “Yes eww” Gale was one of the silliest werewolves in the pack. He had the disgusting habit of asking everyone to look into his mouth to confirm if his fangs had developed which was never the case. “But the point I'm making here is they can catch each other's scent and know what's going through the other person's mind” “Can't we all do that?” “It's not the same, it's a stronger level. But what's more fascinating is how you knew he was in danger though he's not a pack member, doesn't that mean..” “Sam don't get ahead of yourself” Asteria cut her short. “I mean this could be a great thing for us, you've always wanted a strong Alpha, haven't you?” “Does he look strong to you, now end the the topic” Asteria said “Yes Luna,” Samantha said, slightly offended. Asteria noticed her friend's tone and smiled. “Thank you for bringing the pack guardians to save us, we would have probably remained there the night” “I couldn't let you starve in the woods, could I?’ Samantha said her initial offense was diminishing. “I should go now, it's your first time spending the night with a guy right” she said her voice dropping on the last part. “Get out,” Asteria snapped with a chuckle. Samantha smiled giving her a knowing look and went out of the kitchen with a small goodnight in Asteria's mind. When she was alone Asteria put out the fire and went to a bowl to wash her bloodied hand. She couldn't help thinking about what Samantha had said, was he really her fated mate? How could she explain the pull she felt towards him, her heart ache had stopped the moment she set eyes on him and what about what he said we finally met again, what did he mean by that? It was true that she wanted an Alpha who would help her redeem her pack but there was a feeling about him that gave off something higher than she could fathom. She wouldn't dare dream about it. She sighed out as she wiped her hands dry. The small candle that gave light to the hut was about to burn out so she replaced it with a new one. She was setting things in order for the night but then realized that she had to give him the herb extract for the night. She poured it into a bowl and carried it to the place where he laid. When she got there, she almost spilled the liquid at what she saw. He was sitting up, looking around, probably wondering where he was and how he got there. “Uh oh, you're not supposed to wake up by now” she blurted out and he turned to the sound of the voice, their eyes met and once again she couldn't help but feel the tugging at her chest. He blinked taking in her visual, he'd seen her in a dream but wasn't so sure if it was a dream anymore. She walked closer to him and he recoiled instinctively. She placed the bowl on the stool beside the bed and turned to him unsure of what to do. “You were wounded so I brought you here, we..we brought you here and um..and um, the spear I mean the arrow…” she stopped talking when she realized her words were failing her. He was staring at her so intensely that it made her think of disappearing. He isn't saying anything, doesn't he know how to speak? He looked away from her then and winced when he felt the pain in his chest. Asteria's hand instinctively touched his hand and he pulled away from her immediately almost like she was a curse. She stopped hurt and looked at the bowl and back at him. “If you understand the language I speak, this herb extract is meant to make you feel better, take it” Asteria said, unable to to cover her hurt. His eyes were fixed on her again almost like he was from another universe and didn't understand a word she said. She breathed out in frustration when he didn't say a word. “You really need this tho” she said looking at the bowl on the stool, she brought it from the table, stirring it with a wooden spoon. She wasn't sure if he would let her feed him, but it wasn't like she had a choice. “Excuse me for a moment” she said leaning in, she brushed his hair gently behind his ears, she couldn't help but notice the sparks she felt when her fingers brushed his skin. His eyes never left her. With his hair out of the way she fetched the medicine with the spoon and brought it to his mouth. He hesitated a little before taking in the content, coughing out when his tongue tasted the bitter liquid. “You were supposed to be asleep when I give you this, it has a horrible taste” Asteria said concerned, he hissed and took the bowl from her hands, drowning the content down his throat. She stared at him surprised. “I didn't know you could do that,” she said as she collected the bowl from him, noticing how careful he was to make sure their hands didn't brush against each other. He laid down on the bed and closed his eyes. Asteria reading the room assumed he needed to rest and turned to leave but got stopped when she felt his hand hold her back. More like her shirt’s sleeve. She turned to him surprised. “Stay” his voice was deep and hoarse, she blinked, she thought he was dumb but the problem wasn't that he talked the problem was what he said. “Huh” she blinked but before she could process what to say he pulled her down to the bed, she fell into his arms, gasping at her sudden movement. He winced at the pressure on his chest, she moved away quickly but he held her in place. “What are you doing?” she asked, alarmed. “Don't you feel it too?” He responded She fell silent at his words. “You do” he affirmed his confusion. “You're too old not to have a mate” she said and he nodded. “Stay the night, let me confirm what this is then” he whispered, his eyes faltering. The medicine had begun to take a toll on him. “Confirm what?” She asked “Are we fated mates, or are we not?” He said as his eyes closed in sleep
