CHAPTER 4 The bachelor king Kyro stirred in bed, he was freezing cold and was about to call one of his guards when it suddenly dawned on him. He wasn't home. It explained the uncomfortable bed and the weight he felt on his chest. The weight was Asteria's head, he winced as he shifted slowly, placing her more comfortably on the bed. “The weight of your head would kill me before the arrow does” he muttered rubbing his hand on his chest and staring at her. He wouldn't deny that he was the most dumbfounded person that morning. Everything had turned out to be real and not a dream and he was this close to…his mate? He still couldn't believe it. Who she was or what pack she was from he didn't know but it didn't really matter to him. He couldn't let her go. Strange to say but he couldn't stop staring at her, there was something he didn't really understand, something he couldn't place. His fingers slowly untangled her curls that spread out on the bed, it was soft to touch and a lot of things ran through his head. He felt sorry for her. She was fated to a monster. If he left her and disappeared without a trace would it change anything? He doubted that he would be able to let her be. She called out to him, somehow in a manner that was hard to comprehend. Asteria's eyes came open slowly and their eyes met. Her eyes widened and she jumped off the bed briefly forgetting about the previous night. Kyro looked at her puzzled, wondering if she saw a ghost. She sighed out in relief as her memories from last night came back to her. “Sorry,” she muttered self-consciously. “Morning to you too” he said, trying to sit up. She reached out immediately wanting to help him up but he shot her a cold stare and she recoiled. “Just avoid touching me, you almost killed me” He said not so honestly, he remembered the way she had brushed his fur in the forest, it was so tender and assuring. “I saved you tho” Asteria muttered but he heard her and scoffed. Her eyes widened at that instant. “I need to check on my twins” she said and rushed out. “Your what?” He called behind her, suddenly alarmed. Did she have children? That was totally unacceptable, no matter how long he took to find her she didn't have the right to mate with someone else. He waited for her to come back but she didn't. Sick of waiting he carefully stepped out of the bed wondering whose clothes he was putting on, there was no way it was Asteria who dressed him, he cringed at just the thought as he stepped out of the hut. He marveled at the sight that met him. There were many hut houses just like Asteria's, forty at most, the sight was surprising like something he'd never seen before. Why hut houses? Everyone was busy with their chore and the word privacy didn't exactly exist in the place. He squinted his eyes when he saw Asteria chasing down two red haired kids. They were squealing, obviously enjoying the chase. Asteria on the other hand wasn't exactly thrilled about it, he chuckled at the expression on her face surprising himself. “She does look funny” The voice made him flinch and he turned to the silver haired lady beside him, her eyes were a darker shade of silver and she put on a white flowing gown igniting her mysterious look. Kyro thought for a second that priest Velchman had a bastard daughter. He stepped away consciously suddenly aware of her sacredness. “Do you know me?” Samantha asked when she saw the look Kyro had on his face. He shook his head immediately. “But have you heard of your father” he blurted out and she furrowed her brows “I don't know anything about him,” she said, perplexed and Kyro blinked rapidly. It was stupid to say but he might be right. “Why do you ask?” She said looking at him suspiciously He looked away from her and shook his head. Asteria sighted them from her and ran over to meet them, tired from her chase. “You shouldn't be out now” she said when she got to where they stood. He ignored her but found he liked it when she was near. Samantha looked from Asteria to Kyro, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. “So Mr…werewolf, what do you do?” Samantha asked suddenly and Asteria frowned at her. Kyro was surprised at the question too but couldn't help but answer for fear of priest Velchman. “Nothing” he said and they turned to him surprised. Asteria couldn't hide her shock even though she'd been against the question. “How can a grown…” “Samantha” Asteria cut her short. “Alright fine, where do you stay, I might not know all the packs but at least I know few of the elite ones” Asteria had given up on her at this point. “Why are you suddenly asking where I stay?” He asked, confused. “To know if you're a good match for…” “Samantha!” Asteria snapped embarrassed, a deep red coloring her cheeks. Kyro enjoyed her displeased look and decided to humor Samantha. “Of course I'm a perfect match, I stay in the Dawnbreaker palace” He said and by this time their eyes were about to pop out of their sockets. “The Dawnbreaker palace? no way” Samantha said. “We might have some hope Asteria” Samantha said in amusement, at that moment it was too late for Asteria to pray that the ground swallowed her. She was caught between the two and she wondered if he didn't have any idea that Samantha was betting on him. “You must know the old bachelor king then” Samantha laughed and Kyro's head Shut up suddenly offended but then he tried to hide it. “I see the rumors reached this uncivilized place as well,” he said. “The king is the most famous person in the kingdom, wouldn't it be weird if it was the contrary…and seeing how cruel and infamous he is” Samantha said her liveliness diminishing. Kyro was taken aback. “Cruel…” he turned to Asteria then, his expression serious. “Do you also think the King is cruel?” He asked her, she was startled but then shrugged. “Look at how we live, who wouldn't think he's cruel” she said and he looked around the place, catching sight of the twins Asteria had been chasing earlier, their face was covered in dirt. He looked back at her. “Do you think the King did this?” He asked slowly “Of course, we received the decree by the king to be exiled here just because we are the Mundane pack and share just two percent of werewolf blood, it's not like we chose to be born this way, he practically wanted to kill us off. His plans are working tho as we diminish by the month” Samantha said in a slow tune. Kyro blinked, surprised at the news he heard. “I didn't know about a pack called Mundane…” he was saying when Samantha interrupted. “Why do you sound so defensive, are you close to the King?” she asked, teasing him. Kyro blinked, and shrugged his shoulders. “I'm just saying…I'm not sure the king knows anything about it” Asteria had a faraway look in her eyes. “Who would give a royal decree then?” She said, hurt etched in her voice. Kyro looked away from her, he couldn't bear the pain she held in her heart. “Put in a good word for us to the king, we saved you after all” Samantha said her voice talking it's light hearted nature. “Come and have breakfast, you must be famished” Asteria said to him after a while. He shrugged but went in with her. “Natalie and Nahum” she called and he suddenly remembered what he'd wanted to ask her. “Don't tell me those are your real kids” he said furrowing his brows. “Of course they're mine”.
