Chapter 1

Another day...another exam to pass. I can't wait to be done with medical school. If I start studying now, I'll have enough time to study for the immunology exam before I have to start the genetics paper. "Alana! Hello? Why aren't you getting dressed?" “Ugh, can we just go out next week?,” I mumbled softly under my breath. Mila turned around with half of her brightest red lipstick smeared on her lips, “What did you say?” Forcing the sides of my lips to form a smile, “I was saying that I can't wait to finally go out." “Oh please, we both know you're not. You don't have a life.” “I have a life, I'm just focused so I can become a successful doctor, that's all.” Mila let out one of her outrageous laughs,“Blah...blah...blah, just because you're in medical school doesn't mean you can't live or have fun. And you call staying on campus till 3am, studying the same textbook over and over again, a f*****g life?.” “Well, it makes me happy. Look, how about we stay in, order some Chinese, watch movies, and eat ice cream.” “Shut up, you're going out tonight, whether you like it or not, Alana.” “Honestly...I'm so tired” I yawned, falling into the bed.” “Alana! It's my birthday, I can't believe that I seriously have to beg my own cousin to go out with me. You should have been the one who planned for us to go out for my birthday, not me. You're a terrible cousin. ” “You're right babes, I'm a terrible cousin, I promise next year I'll make it up to you.” “You say that every year, this year I'm not letting you get away with it, so get the f**k up and let's go!” Of course, Mila chose the loudest and most crowded club downtown. Now I wish I had actually planned a birthday dinner for her, because at least I would have chosen a decent place. “This is not a restaurant, Mila.” “It's my birthday...my birthday!, so if I want to go dancing, then we are going dancing!” Mila grabbed my hand and pushed us through the sweaty, drunk college students on the dance floor. “Please babes, don't make me dance,” I pleaded. “If I have to tell you one more time that it's my birthday, we will no longer be cousins, and I f*****g mean that Alana.” I paused and quickly scouted the dance floor, hoping no one was looking our way. And just when I thought the coast was clear, there he was, staring me down. It felt like his eyes were penetrating through my body. “Alana!, I don't see that ass shaking,” Mila yelled, bumping her body into mine. “That guy is literally staring at us,” I replied. Mila quickly turned around, “Oh s**t, he is tall and fine! But who wears a suit to the club?.” His eyes pierced through mine, as I stood there trying to avoid looking at him. Before I could utter another word, Mila danced her way over to him and whispered something in his ear. He smiled, and that smile caused me to pause and hold my breath. I was surprised at how paralyzing his smile was. He is handsome -- too handsome. Mila signaled to me to come join them. There was no way in hell I'd do that, and Mila knew that. She danced her way back to me, and grabbed my hand tightly. At that moment, I remembered that Mila lifted weights for fun, so I had absolutely no chance of breaking free. I quickly started rehearsing what I'd say to him and how I'd say it in my head. “Mon amour,” he said, bowing down and kissing my hand. His French accent is so seductive. His voice is so deep and milky. The tattoos on his hands and the feel of his lips on my hand made me bite my lip. The smell of his cologne forcibly drew me in. Mila excused herself to the bathroom and danced her way out of sight. I turned to face him, and looked down. He softly pulled up my chin and moved in closer,“Look at me,” he said. Each time he talked, I'd only pay attention to his lips. He asked if I could take a walk with him. I explained that it was Mila's birthday and that I couldn't leave her. He searched for Mila in the crowd and walked towards her. He handed her something and said something in her ear. Mila jumped up in excitement and ran over to me, “Alana! He's letting his driver take me to the Labelle Hotel. It literally cost an arm and leg to get a room there. He gave me his hotel key card and his black card to buy whatever I want!” “Wait, what? Jesus, who is this guy?” “A very rich man, I'm warning you Alana, don't f**k this up for us!” Before I could reply, Mila kissed my cheek and was on her way out of the club. He walked back to me, staring right through me again. Even from afar, his gaze was so intense. “Your friend is well taken care of mon amour. Now, would you like to join me for a walk?,” he asked, holding out his hand. His hand was soft, firm and had a strong grip. It was surprising how tiny my hands felt in his. I felt so safe with him, like nothing in the world could hurt me because he was there. I hated how naive I felt, but I couldn't help it. Every time he'd smile, I'd instantly smile. He didn't talk about himself; he only asked me questions and patiently listened as I talked his ear off about my hospital rotations and medical school. “I haven't even asked you your name?.” He suddenly frowned and quickly replied “You can call me K, like the letter K.” “Just K.” “Oui, just K.” “What's your last name?” “How about we dwell in the mystery of tonight Alana, what a beautiful name for a beautiful girl.” Before I could reply, he stood in front of me and lingered his thumb on my lips. I felt my body gravitate forward toward his chest, and inhaled his mesmerizing cologne. He lifted my chin, but before his lips could touch mine, I heard a familiar voice call out my name. “Alana! Wow, it is you! You're actually outside, and you look so hot!” My eyes rolled to the back of my head when I realized it was Dylan from my emergency medicine rotation, and he was drunk, as usual. “Dylan, how are you?” “How are you Alana! You look so hot!” he repeated, stumbling. Knowing Dylan, he is definitely going to get himself in some kind of trouble tonight. “I'm so sorry K, I should help him back to his dorm.” “Are you sure you're safe with him?” “Dylan is harmless, I promise.” “How about I get my driver to drop him off.” “Oh no don't worry about it, he literally lives down this street.” “Alright then, please be safe.” I wanted to ask for his number, but I didn't know how. “Don't worry mon amour, I'll call you,” he said, placing a kiss on my forehead. I heard the weight of Dylan's body hit the pavement. I quickly rushed to Dylan's side, and when I turned around, K was gone. After putting Dylan in his bed, I sat down and called Mila. “Alana, I am in heaven, seriously this hotel suite is literally heaven.” “I'm glad you're enjoying yourself.” “Where are you? Are you with the hot billionaire?” “No, I had to get Dylan home, he's drunk himself to stupor as usual.” “Did you at least get the billionaire's number?” “No, he said he'd call me, even though he didn't ask for my number.” “He's insanely rich, he′ll find your number. I asked the hotel staff about him, but they were so secretive, all they could tell me was that he is a billionaire and they refer to him as Mr. K.” “Yeah, he's definitely mysterious.” “Come join me at the hotel.” “Nah, I think I'll just go back to the apartment and study, I have an exam tomorrow.” “I'm not surprised; anyway I'm glad you came out with me tonight.I'll see you on Sunday, I am not leaving this hotel until I enjoy everything here.” “Have fun, babes.” I sat there, replaying the night over and over again, trying to outline the handsome strangers’ contagious smile with my lips.
