Laying naked in his arms on the hospital bed made me feel alive. Oh, God! How do I stop myself from falling in love with him?
“Be mine Alana.”
I quickly got up and started putting my scrubs back on,“I'll be very honest with you Kayden, I’m scared to get hurt, and I don’t fit into your world, it wouldn’t work.”
“Okay, what if I gave up all my wealth?”
I looked at him and laughed, but he didn’t laugh with me.
“I know what I want, and I want you, Alana.”
“I don’t know about that. Once you get out of here and go back to your life, things might change.”
“I don't want a life without you in it, I need you in my life. Please think about it and let me know.”
“I promise I’ll think about it.”
“My family’s coming tonight. I want you to meet them.”
“After all this time you’ve been in the hospital, now they’re coming to see you?”
“It’s a long story.”
“Okay, I can’t wait to hear all about it, I have to go check on my other patients now.”
“Okay beautiful, see you soon.”
As I walked through the hallway my heart started racing, thinking about everything that just happened. I swore in my freshman year that I would never give another man any power over me. And now it feels like I’m about to make the same mistake I made years ago.
I have to call and tell Mila everything, I can’t hold it in anymore.
“Mila...something happened.”
“Why are you whispering on the phone?”
“Because I’m still in the hospital.”
“What happened?”
“I wasn’t allowed to tell you or anyone anything because I signed an NDA...anyway, remember the rich guy from months ago? Well, he's been my patient for some time now.”
“The f**k? And now you’re telling me?!”
“Like I said, I signed an NDA.”
“Why is he there?”
“He was in a car accident. ”
“Jesus.”
“But he’s recovering now. The problem is, so much has happened between him and I...and I’m worried that...”
“What happened?”
“We did it.”
“Did what?”
“Seriously, Mila...”
“Alana! Wait you...shit, I never saw this coming!”
“In the hospital Mila, on his hospital bed...”
“Alana Rose Abraham, I am so proud of you. I need every single tiny detail. Do not leave anything out!”
“I'll tell you everything when I get home.”
“Just tell me this, was he big down there?”
“Let's just say it’s hard to walk properly.”
“Alana!”
“I'll see you when I get home.”
Throughout the day I was so nervous to meet Kayden’s family, and even more nervous to give him an answer.
It's 9 pm and Kayden texted me that his family was here. The time had come to start heading to the 8th floor. I decided to take the elevator at the end of the hallway, to buy more time and ease my nerves.
As the elevator stopped on the ground floor and opened up, I smelled that mesmerizing cologne.
“Mon amour!”
I slowly looked up, to see Kayden in a royal blue suit.
“Kayden! Why are you out of bed, and you shaved off your beard?”
“Kayden?”
“Wait, your French accent is back.”
“Quoi?”
“Do you remember things from the past now, because the amnesia caused by the accident could fade away at any moment.”
“Alana, my twin brother Kayden, is the one on the 8th floor.”
“Twi..twi..twin brother!”
It felt like everything was frozen in time, it all started to make sense. Kayden’s personality was completely different from the person I met that night at the club.
“So it was you...I met you that night?”
“Oui.”
“And then you disappeared...”
“I wasn’t sure that you’d be safe with the drunk guy, so I waited in the car while you were in his dorm, to make sure that you’d get home safe. You came out of his dorm in the morning with a smile on your face. I figured I’d leave you two to it.”
“I just fell asleep on his couch, that was all,” I replied.
“It doesn’t matter now, I’m so happy we got to meet again and this time I’m not letting you go. My name is Kane, mon amour, it's a pleasure to see your beautiful face again,” he said, kissing my hand.
I stared into his eyes as he stared back into mine. He hit the stop button on the elevator and pressed his soft lips on mine. Every thought in my mind screamed Kayden, but his lips drew mine in, and I didn’t want it to stop.
I felt his hands caress my breasts as he lingered his lips on my neck. Intense heat radiated through my body, forcing me to stop kissing him.
“I’m sorry if I went too far...I couldn’t resist you.”
I moved away from him, “I’m just not feeling well, that’s all.”
I hit the release button and the elevator began running again. I planned to go home instead of Kayden’s room.
“Alana! ahh I see you’ve met your patient’s twin brother, it’s so freaky how they look exactly alike, even with the tattoos, eh?”
“You must be Dr. Bonlen.”
“Yes, I’m the one you spoke to on the phone.”
“Thank you so much for taking excellent care of my brother.”
“My pleasure, but I must say Alana here was by his side every single day.”
He looked at me surprised, as I looked away in guilt,“If you’ll both excuse me, I’m heading home.”
“Before you head home, I need you to do the last checkup on the patient, so I can submit tonight's report.”
“Oh, Dr. Bonlen, I...”
“Come along Alana!”
As we walked to the room, I thought my heart would give out because it was beating too fast.
Then I saw a woman with flashy pearls and diamonds on her neck, wrist and fingers. She looked expensive from head to toe, and her beauty was breathtaking.
“Mama” Kane said, giving the woman a tight hug.
“Oh my sweet boy, are you alright?”
" Oui, I came right after your call.”
She looked at me and smiled, “You must be Alana, thank you so much for taking good care of my son,” she said, pulling me into a hug.Wow! She smelled incredibly expensive.
Kane cleared his throat, “How is he doing?”
“Come see for yourself,” his mother replied.
As they made their way into the room, I stood outside hyperventilating.
“Darling, come on in,” their mother called out.
I walked in and tried to look down as much as possible.
“Mum...Kane, I’d like you to meet my future wife.”
I almost choked on air, and quickly looked up at Kane. He had this furious look in his eyes and walked out of the room.
“What’s his problem?” Kayden asked, sitting up.
“Well, you know your brother.”
I forced myself to smile as millions of thoughts raced through my head.
I told Kayden and his mom that I wasn’t feeling well. They offered to have their driver take me home, but I just wanted to be alone to process everything. So, I lied and told them Mila was waiting for me outside the hospital to drive me home. I quickly ran to the locker room and grabbed my bag. I waited for my uber outside, completely lost in my thoughts.
“Let me drive you home.”
I quickly turned around, “God...you scared me!”
Kane opened the passenger door, “Get in, I’ll take you home.”
I looked at the car that looked like it cost millions of dollars, “I already ordered an uber.”
“Cancel it, I’ll drive you home.”
“I’m pretty sure you’d want to stay here with your brother.”
“Cancel the uber Alana!”
I saw the look of desperation in his eyes, and a part of me was curious to know why.
“Okay...okay, I’ll cancel it.”
While in the car, I waited for him to speak first. He seemed so worried and agitated.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“It’s the story of our lives. I find something I want, and somehow he ends up getting it first.”
“Look Kane, I am honestly sorry about everything. I had no idea you had a twin brother. I still can’t believe it. The whole time, I thought he was you.”
“Are you going to marry him?”
“Marriage?” I giggled. “Not anytime soon, I’m still in medical school.”
“So, you do eventually want to marry him in the future, Oui?”
“I don’t know, like I told him I don’t fit into his world.”
“Why don’t you sit back and relax, I know you must be exhausted,” he said, kissing my hand.
The thoughts of Kayden and everything that happened played out in my mind like a movie and in no time I slept off.
When I woke up, I was surprised that we were still on the road. It felt like I had been asleep for hours.
“Where are we?”
“We are on our way to Vermont.”
“Excuse me?”
“I’m taking you to Vermont.”
“What do you mean, you’re taking me to Vermont? I don’t live in Vermont.”
“It’s just going to be for a week.”
“This must be some kind of joke,” I said with a nervous laugh.
“I want you, mon amour, ever since that night I couldn’t stop thinking about you.”
“Yet, you didn’t call me.”
“The thought of you being with your drunk friend that night made me take a step back, but that was my mistake, I should have never let you go.”
“Kane...please take me home, I have rotations and four exams to study for.”
“That’s your problem, mon amour, you don’t know what it is to live. Yes, success requires endless hard work, but if you let it consume your whole life, when will you have time to live?”
“So, you’re basically kidnapping me?”
“Oui…I guess I am.”
“I don’t want to hurt your brother.”
“I already texted him with your phone to let him know you’re going to visit your parents.”
“You did what?!”
“Alana...before you run off with my brother, I need to show you what happiness is with me first, then you can make your decision.”
“I can’t hurt Kayden.”
“You don’t have a clue who my brother really is Alana.”
“And I don't have a clue who you are either!”
“Look, just give me a week...just one week, after that, if you still want my brother, I swear I’ll leave both of you alone to dwell in your happiness, Oui?”
I slumped back down in the car seat. How the f**k did I get myself into this mess?
