I woke up to the soft, angry cry of my babies.
I heard Aurora's cry first, a high-pitched scream. Adrian followed half a second later, lower and more agitated, as if he'd just woken up to complain.
My body reacted before my brain did.
A sharp, burning pain shot through my chest, making my eyes go blurry.
I sucked in a breath through my teeth and pushed myself upright, moving slowly and carefully, as if one wrong shift would shatter me.
Luca stirred beside me immediately.
“Aria?” His voice was hoarse, half asleep, and his hands were already starting to reach out.
“I’ve got it,” I whispered, already swinging my legs over the bed. “Go back to sleep.”
But he sat up, his eyes tracking me as I grabbed my robe and slipped into the nursery.
