Chapter three. DIGGING DEEPER

316 Words
Under the cover of night, Tina stood outside the secure vault entrance deep within the facility. The hum of the facility’s automated systems was the only sound in the vast corridor. Her hands trembled as she inserted the bypass chip Renfield had provided into the scanner. The chip had been risky to acquire—an illicit tool capable of cracking high-level security systems. The scanner’s light blinked yellow, then green. The heavy door hissed open. Inside, the air was cool and sterile. Rows of servers and glowing data terminals filled the room, each humming with the secrets of a society built on eternal youth. At the center of the room stood a towering cylindrical pod—the Core. Tina approached it cautiously, her eyes scanning the interface. It displayed lines of code and holographic diagrams of cellular stasis mechanisms. Her breath caught as she read the labels: "Subject Life-Force Extraction." "Unstable Stasis Protocols." "Resource Dependency: Anomalous Subjects." Her knees weakened as the implications sank in. The immortality process wasn’t powered by technology alone. It required the extraction of life energy from those who didn’t fully adapt to the stasis process—people like her. She stumbled back, her scarf slipping from her neck. A surveillance camera whirred, adjusting its angle to capture her exposed wrinkle. An alarm began to blare. Renfield’s voice crackled through her earpiece. "Tina, you need to get out. Now." "They… they’re using people," she whispered, frozen in place. "This isn’t just a glitch. It’s… genocide." "I know," Renfield said urgently. "That’s why we have to expose it. But you can’t do it if you’re caught. Move!" Tina snapped out of her daze and bolted toward the exit, her mind racing with the horrifying truth. She didn’t just hold the key to her own survival—she held the power to dismantle the illusion of perfection that bound society. But at what cost?
