Chapter Ten. DISCOVERY OF BETRAYAL

416 Words
Tensions within the resistance hit a boiling point as leaks and failures mounted. Tina became increasingly suspicious, piecing together inconsistencies in their operations. Late one night, she overheard a whispered conversation in the control room. "They’re getting too close," a voice said, sharp with anxiety. "You need to divert them, or this whole thing collapses." "I’m doing what I can," another voice replied. "But we’re running out of time." Tina’s breath caught as she crouched in the shadows, her heart pounding. The voices were muffled, but the tone was unmistakable—someone was betraying them. She waited until the room fell silent before slipping inside, her eyes scanning for clues. On the console, a communication log displayed a series of encrypted messages. Tina quickly copied the data onto her drive, her hands shaking. She needed proof, and this was her best chance. --- The next morning, Tina confronted Renfield in private. "Look at this," she said, handing him the drive. "These messages—they’re coming from someone on the inside." Renfield’s face darkened as he reviewed the files. "This is bad," he muttered. "If this gets out, it’ll destroy morale." "We can’t keep it quiet," Tina argued. "If we don’t root out the traitor, we’re finished." Reluctantly, Renfield agreed to a covert investigation. Tina began monitoring the team, watching for any signs of duplicity. She noticed Carmen’s late-night absences, Renfield’s uncharacteristic nervousness, and subtle changes in behavior that set her on edge. --- The breakthrough came during a supply run. Tina stumbled upon a hidden compartment in the armory, filled with unauthorized equipment and forged documents. Among the items was a transmitter linked to the enemy’s frequency. Her stomach turned as she realized the implications. Someone had been feeding them information directly from their base. Tina pocketed the transmitter and returned to confront the others. In a tense meeting, she placed the evidence on the table. "This was hidden in our armory," she said, her voice steady despite the anger bubbling beneath the surface. "Someone here is working against us." The room erupted into accusations and denials, the team splintering under the weight of distrust. Tina watched as Carmen and Renfield exchanged a glance, their shared guilt written in the tension between them. "We can’t let this divide us," Tina said firmly. "Whoever is responsible, we’ll find them. But right now, we need to stay united." Despite her words, the seeds of betrayal had been sown, and Tina knew the resistance would never be the same.
