Chapter 1The Weakest Omega

1367 Words
The first thing I heard on my nineteenth birthday was laughter. Not celebration. Not congratulations. Laughter. Hundreds of werewolves stood beneath the silver moonlight, watching me fail the most important ceremony of my life. The Awakening Ceremony. For every werewolf, this was the day that decided their future. The day they discovered their wolf. The day they learned their rank. The day they proved whether they were worthy of standing among their kind. For most people, it was a blessing. For me, it was a judgment. I stood barefoot on the cold black stone of the Moon Temple, staring at the crystal altar in front of me. The sacred crystal remained dark. No silver light. No wolf spirit. No awakening. Nothing. The elder standing beside the altar slowly withdrew his hand. His expression was calm, but everyone knew what it meant. “Again.” His voice echoed through the temple. “Place your hand on the crystal again, Evelyn.” I swallowed and obeyed. My fingers touched the cold surface. For a moment, I waited. Maybe this time would be different. Maybe the Moon Goddess would finally answer. Maybe the rumors were wrong. Maybe I wasn’t broken. But the crystal remained silent. The whispers started immediately. “Still nothing?” “She’s already nineteen.” “How can an Omega have no wolf?” “She’s a Blackwood. How embarrassing.” I lowered my eyes. I had heard worse. Much worse. I was Evelyn Blackwood. The daughter of the Blackwood family. One of the oldest Alpha bloodlines in the kingdom. A family known for producing powerful warriors, brilliant leaders, and legendary Alphas. Everyone expected greatness from me. Instead… I gave them disappointment. The elder looked at the crystal one last time. Then he turned toward the crowd. “Evelyn Blackwood’s awakening has failed.” The words fell like a stone into still water. Everyone heard them. Everyone understood them. Failed. That was the only thing they would remember. I looked toward the highest seats of the temple. My family was there. My father, Alpha Marcus Blackwood. My mother, Selena Blackwood. And my younger sister, Isabella. My father looked away. My mother looked uncomfortable. But Isabella… She was smiling. Not an evil smile. Not a cruel smile. A gentle smile. The kind of smile people showed when they believed they had already won. Isabella had everything I didn’t. A powerful wolf. A rare bloodline. Beautiful appearance. The admiration of every pack in the kingdom. She was the daughter everyone was proud of. And I was the daughter everyone tolerated. “Poor Evelyn.” A woman in the crowd whispered. “She probably won’t even find a mate.” Another person answered. “Who would choose a powerless Omega?” Their words were quiet. But werewolves had excellent hearing. I heard every single one. Strangely… I didn’t feel hurt. Maybe because I had already experienced this moment before. Not in this life. In another one. ⸻ My name used to be Emily Carter. I wasn’t born into a werewolf family. I wasn’t an Omega. I wasn’t someone waiting for a mate. I was a researcher. A person who spent most of her life studying genetics and biological evolution. I had lived a completely different life. Until the accident. Until I opened my eyes and became Evelyn Blackwood. At first, I thought it was a dream. Then I saw the familiar names. The familiar world. The story I had once read. The Moon’s Chosen Queen. A romance novel about the rise of the legendary Luna who would unite the werewolf kingdom. And Evelyn Blackwood… Was never supposed to be important. She was a minor character. A forgotten daughter. A girl who failed her awakening ceremony. A girl who spent her life chasing the love of people who never truly wanted her. Her ending was simple. She disappeared. Nobody remembered her. Nobody mourned her. The original Evelyn spent her entire life trying to prove she deserved love. But she never asked the most important question. Why should she beg for something that was never given freely? I looked at my family again. And for the first time… I felt nothing. ⸻ “Evelyn.” My father’s voice pulled me back. “The ceremony is finished.” I turned around. He was looking at me with a serious expression. “You will return home.” Home. That word almost made me laugh. Because the Blackwood estate had never been home. It was just a place where I was allowed to exist. “I won’t.” The entire temple went quiet. My father frowned. “What did you say?” I lifted my head. “I said I won’t return.” My mother immediately stepped forward. “Evelyn, don’t make a scene.” A scene. That was what they always called it. Whenever I spoke. Whenever I complained. Whenever I refused to accept being ignored. I looked at her calmly. “I’m not making a scene.” “Then what are you doing?” “I’m choosing my own life.” My father stared at me. “You have no wolf. No power. No pack willing to accept you.” His words were cruel. But honest. The old Evelyn would have cried. She would have begged. She would have asked him why Isabella was always loved while she was always abandoned. But I already knew the answer. Some people didn’t love you because you weren’t enough. Some people simply chose not to. “I know.” My father’s expression softened slightly. Maybe he expected me to finally understand my position. But my next words surprised everyone. “That’s why I am leaving.” “Leaving?” My mother looked confused. “Where will you go?” I turned toward the northern mountains. Beyond those mountains was a place everyone avoided. A place whispered about in fear. A place that had almost disappeared from history. The Shadow Moon Pack. The abandoned pack. The cursed pack. The pack nobody wanted. Perfect. “I will join Shadow Moon.” For a moment, nobody reacted. Then laughter exploded. “Shadow Moon?” “That ruined pack?” “She must be desperate.” Even my father looked shocked. “Evelyn, do you understand what you are saying?” “Yes.” “The Shadow Moon Pack has no reputation. No allies. No future.” I looked at him. “No.” My voice was calm. “They have a future.” Nobody noticed the strange confidence in my words. Because nobody knew what I knew. Everyone looked at Shadow Moon and saw a dying pack. I saw something else. A place full of people who had been abandoned. People who had been misunderstood. People who were far more dangerous than anyone realized. My father shook his head. “You are making a mistake.” Maybe. But it was my mistake to make. Not theirs. I turned around. Leaving behind the family that had already given up on me. Leaving behind the life that had been written for me. As I walked out of the Moon Temple, the silver moonlight touched my skin. And suddenly… My heart stopped. A strange warmth spread through my body. Something inside me moved. Something ancient. Something powerful. I froze. Because I heard a voice. A voice that did not belong to anyone around me. A voice that came from somewhere deep within my soul. “Finally…” The whisper was soft. But impossible to ignore. “The forgotten bloodline has awakened.” The moonlight around me changed. Silver flames appeared beneath my feet. The crowd behind me fell silent. Everyone stared. Because the crystal that had remained dark moments ago… Was now shining brighter than ever. The elder’s face turned pale. Impossible. Absolutely impossible. Because the power appearing around me… Was not the power of an ordinary wolf. It was the mark of ancient royalty. A bloodline that had disappeared for hundreds of years. And somewhere far away, in the territory of the Shadow Moon Pack… A sleeping Alpha opened his eyes. For the first time in nineteen years. He felt the presence of his destined mate. ⸻ End of Chapter 1
